I need to do laundry.

Do you separate the colors?

I have heard that the colors might run into the whites, making my clothes ugly.

I have heard that the above is a myth.

Yes, they do. Especially if you use hot water.

Do you want pink underwear?

No.

I use Cold Water and Tide for Cold Water. I separate bath towels from normal clothes and only because I was always told by my dad says that bath towels leave a funky smell.

i've never seperated anything. everything turns out fine except bright whites get a little dingy looking. i would recommend seperating nice white clothing from others. but i don't think it needs to be sorted beyond that.

Maybe that's why guys hate laundry so much. If I were to do that I'd have maybe 5 articles of clothing per washing and 7 washings for every 2 washings. I say try to keep it as simple as possible.

Single guy, living alone (unable to afford a maid) for about 15 years now, so I've had to learn to do the laundry.

Whites seperated and washed in hot (whites are the ones that really need hot water to ensure sanitation - e.g. undies/sheets, etc...)

Colors - together (seperate from whites) and washed in warm or cold water.

I use liquid soap, a little bleach (maybe 1 cup) with whites. NO BLEACH for the colored clothes load, unless its a detergent that has color safe bleach.

What I'm wondering is, is this the first time BostonFixed has done laundry? Two laundry posts right away? Most guys screw up a couple loads before asking how its done.

Boston, did you just get kicked out of your parents' house or something? Why the pleas for all the domestic guidance? Do you know how to buy groceries? That electricity bill is going to come every month now, too, you know. And those rolls of toilet paper don't grow there—you have to buy new ones. Good Luck.

I do dark colored stuff in one load, whites/grays/jeans together in the other. No bleach except for white sheets and pillowcases. Cold water everything. Detergent.

I'm a meticulous launderer-er--er. Er. I do a load of general colours (all colours -- lights, darks, in-betweens, etc...all are old and won't bleed into the lighter colours), a load of work/gym clothes, a load of just black t-shirts, and a load of lights/whites/beiges (which essentially consists of my white undershirts, a couple dress shirts, a heather gray hoodie, and a lighter heather gray t-shirt). I only wear dress socks, so those are in the colours or work clothes. I wash everything on cold, and dry on medium heat, except for work/gym clothes, which I wash in hot. Everytime I get a new article of clothing, I wash it separate the first time...which is lame, since it costs $2.25 to do laundry in my apartment complex. I dry clean all my sweaters and such.

I don't wash jeans...ever. I've gone over six months with one pair worn every day, and I never wore them again after the first wash, except for short bike trips, going through the woods, etc. Just bought another pair and repeated the cycle.

Do you ever see any wild animals when you're out in the woods?

On the back of the frozen pizza box it tells you how long and at what temperature to cook your meal.

Who cares! You shouldn't have white clothes anyway, unless they're stained...and they will be.

My wife forbid me to do any more laundry.

If any of you guys want my secret, I'd tell you if I could figure out what it was.

She also says I do too much yard work and don't watch enough TV.

You're an engineer. Laundry is fashion related so it's guaranteed you'll be completely inept at that. While you can probably explain the basic dissolution and diffusion of dies from new clothes in the wash, you would never notice its effect on anything you were wearing. Yard work for you is a hobby that takes away from family time and keeps you from being up to date on the latest news and trends from TV, which embarrasses her at parties. It's hardly a secret. It's part of what a technical degree does to you.

My mom gave me a few basic instructions before she dropped me off freshmen year: Get plenty of sleep, eat healthy, avoid bad influences and seductive women, and DON'T MIX LIGHTS AND DARKS. The last point was the only one that ended up being relevant. Sleep was a myth, the food sucked, there was no time to fall in with bad influences, and seductive women didn't venture into the engineering hall. I did wash laundry once a week, though.
