heheh... and come to think of it: He was the only other character to captain his own ship (USS Excelsior)... correct me if I'm wrong.

I was such a trekkie whilst growing up, and kind of considered Sulu to be a sort of role model (well, I guess me being a japanese american influenced that). Anyway, I came out when I was 17 years old. For some reason, him coming out just made me really happy... or "gay" :B

There was a lot of transgressive stuff (at least for the times) on Star Trek. Remember the interracial and S&M stuff with the telepathic Roman type aliens?

Add in disfunction too. Kirk was a sexaholic with an inability to form real relationships with women. Nurse Chapel fixated on unattainable and emotionally remote men.

You didn't?

Stacey, I'm in complete agreement.

Still, it's pretty rare for an athlete who is still at the top of his/her game to come out. Personally, I think it took a lot of courage.

David Kopay and Greg Louganis, for example, waited until their competitive careers were essentially over. Tab Hunter waited until he was what, late sixties, to come out?

I wouldn't be so quick to criticize her. While I believe there is a genetic component to homosexuality, I doubt it that it is a one gene trait or that genetics is the only component to be considered. I can guarantee you that no one on this forum knows enough about the biological basis of sexual orientation to make black and white pronouncements on the subject. Nor is one's personal (i.e., specific) experience a valid basis for generalizing to the whole realm of homosexuality.

Yeah, I think along those lines too. I suspect only 20% of homosexuals are genetically born that way, the rest are sucked into it...

I didn't have a clue. Maybe my gaydar isn't working properly. Then again, I didn't suspect that Anderson Cooper and Shepard Smith were gay either. Since I'm so bad at spotting these things, can someone tell me - Barry Manilow? I suspect yes, but who knows?

As I recall, Manilow's early career was the piano player for Bette Midler in NY gay bars. Still, a job's a job and he could be the Lion of Long Island for all I know.

Way to go, George.

Thou canst not then be false to any man.

No way! Anderson Cooper is gay? I have such a crush on him! Not like it would ever have been anyway.

I also didn't know about Shepard Smith. Maybe I need to read more "People."

The dark side of Star Trek

Link

Quote:
The Star Trek connection

A surprising number of child sex abusers appear to be Trekkies. Trying to figure out what that means, however, shows how little we really know about pedophiles

The first thing detectives from the Toronto police sex crimes unit saw when they entered Roderick Cowan's apartment was an autographed picture of William Shatner. Along with the photos on the computer of Scott Faichnie, also busted for possessing child porn, they found a snapshot of the pediatric nurse and Boy Scout leader wearing a dress "Federation" uniform. Another suspect had a TV remote control shaped like a phaser. Yet another had a Star Trek credit card in his wallet. One was using "Picard" as his screen name. In the 3 1/2 years since police in Canada's biggest city established a special unit to tackle child pornography, investigators have been through so many dwellings packed with sci-fi books, DVDs, toys and collectibles like Klingon swords and sashes that it's become a dark squadroom joke. "We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars," says Det. Ian Lamond, the unit's second-in-command. "But it's mostly Star Trek."

It's the type of oddball coincidence that's difficult to ignore. Even more so when you realize there's virtually nothing else, beyond their shared perversion, that links the new generation of child sex offenders. When the Toronto squad -- which drew international attention this month for its successful efforts to identify a young victim, the so-called Disney World Girl -- first started, investigators could draw a profile of their typical bust. It was the common stereotype of the molester and collector -- an older white male, living alone or with his aged parents, often in squalid conditions. "A loser in a basement wearing track pants," says Lamond.

Nothing has been confirmed about Cooper, not that it would matter..
However, if Shep Smith WAS gay and came out I'd laugh my ass off. Rupert Murdoch and his Faux News cronies would **** themselves! They'd have to find some way to buy him out quietly to keep their reich-wing image intact.

No great sacrifice, it seems, to shed transparent baggage.

The remarkable point is that it took so long, why bother now? It might have helped to educate or provide support to other gays if this happened when there was still some risk involved. Pretty hard for a man to be living with another man for so long, at his age and fame, for everybody in the industry to not know what the situation was.

One positive contribution of Star Trek in fact was the high prominence of ethnic and racial minorities among the characters (of course not counting tribbles and the like) and the passage of only a couple more centuries before humans arrived at gender equality. But we're no longer left wondering why there were no gays in space until Kathryn Janeway: the actors allowed themselves to be silenced by the writers...
