Computer Geeks, Win ME Question.....

A virus / software program is telling me I have some nasty spyware
that it can't extract because the 'file is in use or access denied'
I called tech support (True Sword) and they said the virus is just a harmless
mimick(?), not a real virus, of an AVG FREE virus program that runs too and
if it bothers me I should just delete all of the 'C: TEMP_RESTORE_ ' files
where the spyware is supposed to be residing. That just doesnt sound right
My machine will not let me delete these files. Is there anyway I can get access or
change permissions so I can get rid of these .TMP files ?? The offending file
has a .CPY extension but is in the TEMP_RESTORE_ folder.

Thanks in advance !
I geeks !!

Start your computer in "Safe Mode", should be F8 as your computer boots. Run the A/V pgm from Safe Mode and see what happens.

You can also try from a command prompt and use "del /f filename.txt".

Another option is to find a program called "MoveOnBoot" which will move the files to another location on a reboot and allow them to not be accessed so you can delete them.

+1 on that. Roll back to 98se or go up to XPpro. We've got a ME box in the shop that I work in P/T that is giving us shivering fits!

Back in the day I upgraded from 98 (rev 1) to WinME on a Friday afternoon. By Sunday morning I was running to local software shop willing to pay full retail prices on Win2K just to get rid of ME. I had it all of about36 hours maybe (And about 50 BSODs in that time).

Before you go deleting anything, I'd make a re-named copy (add "_1" or the like to the end of the file name) of the file/folder to a differend location, then delete the suspect file/folder. If you have no problems with the machine after a week or so, then delete the re-named material.

From what I've been using XP at the shop, it's kind of the neat stuff. But my 98SE runs like a raped ape on this 1.2gig box And its oh so stable too

Thanks for help people !!
I think I will try KingTermites suggestion about MOVEonBOT.
As to all the other ones....Stacy, I did try F8 and it didnt work.....
SpokesinPoop, I agree....I would rather run 3.1 than ME. Miss Cleo
see a LapTop coming very shortly so I am going to run this for a while more.
What really sux is that I did buy a copy of XP to upgrade and the XP said
it wouldnt install because it couldnt find another copy of Windows on the HD ?!?!
huh ? WTF !!!! ..Even Microsoft doesnt want to support it anymore !!!

It's a good idea to turn off system restore before starting into safe mode and running the virus scan. I believe on ME it's:
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

+1

Also, it may be worthwhile to try a "second-opinion" scan with a couple of good online antivirus scanners. I've listed a few here: http://www.mechbgon.com/build/resources.html The Panda and TrendMicro ones are recommended because they've got cleaning capabilities, not just detection. The Kaspersky one would report what it finds, and they've got some darn good detection, so it could be worthwhile as a "third opinion" even though it doesn't remove stuff.

New viruses/etc arrive fast nowdays. Typically McAfee has 20-50 new ones listed per day, with enhanced detection for 100-200 that were already known (McAfee's daily loadout), so consider doing those second-opinion scans.

Sure thing and if you haven't done so recently, consider running your system through the Windows Update site several times to get it all patched up Windows Update site

BTW Microsoft's customary day to release new security updates is the second Tuesday of the month, so visit Windows Update again next Tuesday or thereafter, there's a new security patch coming this month that looks important.

We have an entire division in our company who still has to use/maintain DOS computers for some hardware applications. They have dozens or more of them....stuck because of 1553 cards that use ISA bus slots.
