I am sick today..

and have laryngitis. Won't my students be amused tomorrow?

My son just patted me on the back and commented on how nice and quiet it had been at the house this weekend. The only thing that saved him is that he can run faster than me!

I enjoyed my solidary bout with laryngitis. Course, I was working in a call center. My boyfriend enjoyed it thoroughly, unfortunately.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Do not use your voice for several days. Either speak very softly or write notes until you can talk normally.
Use a cool-mist humidifier (vaporizer) to increase air moisture and help relieve the tight feeling in your throat. Hot, steamy showers can also help.
Do not drink alcohol or smoke until your voice is back to normal.
Get plenty of rest.
Drink extra fluids, such as water, fruit juice, and tea.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e....htm#Treatment
Decongestants and pain killers may relieve symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, if present.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laryngitis#Home_treatments
Home treatments
Ibuprofen and Aspirin may help alleviate fever and some of the discomfort associated with Laryngitis
Avoid speaking when possible. Speak softly, but do not whisper
Drink warm liquids such as tea or a honey-lemon drink
Take cough drops, and throat lozenges. In a pinch suck on hard candy.
Stay hydrated, drink plenty of liquids; water, orange juice, etc.
Humidifiers and warm showers can also help alleviate some symptoms
Avoid airborne irritants such as smoke and allergens
Gargle with a salt water rinse; avoid mouth rinses containing alcohol which can dry the throat

Ms. Vicki....Let me give you an old laryngitis story of mine to cheer you up. Maybe you can get a silent chuckle out of it.

Up until this point when I got my 1st case of laryngitis I just couldn't believe that one would truly lose their voice completely....it just made no sense. So when I got it the first time during my 2nd year of college, God decided to punish my ignorance. I truly got it so bad I couldn't even utter a peep.

I was student goverment president of the school at the time and we had meetings to run. Since I had no voice, I had to ask Jimmy (the vice pres.) to run the meeting for me. It was all cool. We had been told that one of the teachers (community college by the way) wanted to speak at our meeting. We had a much apathy from students and teacher, so we were actually a bit excited that a teacher wanted to be involved enough to speak at the meeting.

The day of the meeting arrives and Jimmy is running the meeting. Now...understand I am a bit outspoken, probably even moreso then than I am now. The teacher starts speaking and within about 3 minutes it was evident that the "message" he wanted to speak about was nothing more than an AMWAY pitch!!! I was up in arms....making gestures trying to get him to stop, however I couldn't utter a single word with the laryngitis. I was passing notes to Jimmy over and over and over for about 25 minutes or so before Jimmy finally got up the "oomph" to tell the guy that he couldn't be pitching Amway at our meeting and needed to stop.

Of ALL the times for me to have lost my voice....I'd have LOVED to been able to tell that guy to stop MY WAY at the time!!!

Actually, my students WERE very amused today. I could barely be heard, and that was with me straining to speak. When they got off task or got too loud, I would try unsuccessfully to get them to behave. I finally wrote on the board "MY VOICE MIGHT BE GONE, BUT MY MIND IS NOT. I WILL REMEMBER THIS TOMORROW!"

That did the trick.

Scotttogo, thanks for the home remedies, etc.!

Hope you get better. It's going around.

I was sleeping under the stars in the beautiful southern california desert this weekend. The temp got into the high 20's.

Now I'm coughing.

One day I'll learn that I'm not 21 any more.

Joshua Tree? What are you doing?? It's cold out there at night!

Ms Vicki, have you tried that Airborne stuff? It's supposed to work wonders and was developed by a teacher.
