Its like where you and only where other people are also in the car with you. So basically it means like there has to be more than one person with you in the car. I think thats also the HOV lane.

Another way to explain it is to say that if you are driving in the car pool lane, and nobody else is in the car with you, you could get a ticket...

We don't have any in this area, but the few I've seen in other cities, I'm pretty sure called them "car pool lanes". I'm particularly thinking of Seattle.

A high occupancy vehicle (or HOV) is a transportation engineering and transportation planning term referring to a vehicle with a driver and one or more passengers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car-pool_lane

They come in handy during traffic. Although when you want to exit you have to fight your way to the right

You used to be able to post in English. What happened?

The HOV (High occupancy vehicle) lane and car pool lane are essentially the same thing. The far left lane is for vehicles carrying two or more occupants. Given the sheer quantity of single occupant vehicles clogging the California freeway system, it makes sense that if you have more than one person in the car, you should be afforded this privilege. Between the Mexican border and LA there are plenty of miles of freeway built like this. As a bonus, you can only enter and exit the HOV lane at certain points. This means you rarely have to deal with people merging in and out in front of you. Makes for a much faster trip.

Uhhh... if you have less than ONE person in the car, just who are the cops going to give the ticket to, anyway?

Car-pool lanes are where the blow-up sex dolls earn their living performing dual-functions...

True story - A couple of days after the HOV lanes opened here, the cops busted some guy that had dressed blow-up dolls in sports jackets and put them in the car as 'passengers'.
Sadly, nobody uses the HOV now except busses, even when the speed limit on the HOV is much higher than on the regular lanes and it doesn't see gridlock.

I think at that point it becomes a parking ticket.

Depending on the city or state, you can drive motorcycles and certain hybrid or electrical vehicles in the HOV/carpool lanes without any passengers.

Plenty of people use the HOV in the DC area, though that's due in part to cheaters.
