Suggestions for baby names...?

So my wife and I are due to have our second child in June. We're pondering names and are looking for some good suggestions. We're not going to find out the gender until the baby is born, so let's hear suggestions for both girls and boys and why they would be good names.

By the way, I'm not adverse to selling the kid's naming rights, so if your corporation has the right dollar amount, let's talk! (just kidding!)

There's really no shortage of good names. How about something from your heritage?

I also like to point out that it's important to remember that few people use their full names, so be aware of what nickname or short name your child will be stuck with.

Yeah, but this is Foo.... I know the regulars out here can come up with some creative names that are not part of the everyday list from which most kids' names are culled these days (Caitlyn/Katelyn/etc., Emma, Jack, Nathan, Dylan, Austin, whatever is popular now)....

Bibi and I didn't know the gender of our first, so each week we'd pick out a new name, alternating between girls and boys names. Then we'd refer to the baby (not yet born) as William or Mary, etc. all week. Some names we thought we'd like, we didn't like at all after a week. Then a name would really stick and that's how we picked the two finalists.

+1 on thinking about the nickname ahead of time. Both our boys' names were picked with a thought to having a short, one syllable nickname that we liked.

If Dario Peggoretti wants to give me a nice bike in honor of naming the kid after one of his rides, then, hey, what else could I do??

(Yeah, coming on the internet for names could be trouble, but this could be fun!)

(And, no... my real last name is not Lowe.... so just think of first/middle names without regard to the last name.)

You could pay tribute to this period of US postal history, and the current rapper at the top of the chart and name the child "39 cent".

For a boy, all you need to do is look in the pro peleton for some interesting names. Lance, Alexander, Jan, Joseba, Viatcheslav, Danilo, Wim, Cadell, Robbie, Igor, Inigo...

For a girl, I'll let someone else make suggestions.

fwiw - we have a girl (Contessa), and a boy (Earl). Contessa has been quite happy about her name. Earl, on the other hand, has had to put up with kids teasing him with a Dixie Chicks song, and references to characters on TV shows. No telling how society might turn things one way or the other.

Yeah, I suggested THOR and MAGNUS, but those are really tough names for a skinny non-Nordic kid to live up to in the Midwest....

Realistically, what you want to do is pick a name that's a b***h to make fun of.
So make sure it doesn't rhyme with anything, make sure it can't be turned into something else, make sure it can't be used with anything else.

Like, naming your kid "Hole", that's just asking for it.

If your a big ole Russian, you can go for some of the cool sounding but slightly squishy nicknames like Sasha (I think that's Alexander). Gotta be big though. My mom wanted to name me Etienne. Talk about "A boy named Sue." I'd never have survived 3rd grade.

For girls, I always liked Natascha. Natascha is a babe who will kick your butt in calculus and has no time for idiots.

There is no male name that a class full of 3rd grade boys can't turn into a reference to poop, farts, any of a number of body parts, feminity, or any form of perceived inferiority (too smart, too stupid, slow, ugly, polite, etc.)

KingTermite is a really nice and unique name.

Or....if a boy (Chinese name ok?):
Hung Lowe?

or even
Bill Lowe?
or
Al Lowe?

A girl, could be
Pea Lowe (short for Sweet Pea of course)?
or
Bea Lowe?

Dude, you took my suggestion! Seven's a great name! Or you could name the kid Soda Pop, Pony Boy, Ford Prefect, Slartibartfast, and the ever popular Shlomo.
