Ok, so I'm a girl. Goofy question~

Haven't been really riding all winter. Just a few quick runs. Feeling slow and fat. Outta shape. Don't plan on being really hard core on my bike, that's what my Cake is for. Soooo..........................

For casual riding, what do you think if I put a......uh.....ummmm...........a... (don't laugh)........ *basket* on this bike? On the handlebars.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< And please don't laugh. So go ahead. Laugh.

And.....one more question. Where do I find one? I don't want a metal one. Wicker. A nice medium sized wicker one. Easy to attach and to take off. Don't want to install any brackets or anything. That would be nice.

I think a wicker basket on your Kona would be kinda odd looking, but if that's what you want, go for it!.

I say go to your LBS and tell them what you want...they can special order it.

Or just find a way to use metal straps and rubber padding (to avoid gouging the handlebars) to bind a wicker basket to it.

Too embarrassed to order one from my LBS. You think it would look funny? That's why I'm asking. I still have to keep my "cool" factor. Good gosh, it's a Kona. But I liked the basket I had on my bike years and years ago. But it wasn't a Kona. Would I be cramping my style? Tell me I'm stupid. Maybe someone could photoshop an 05 Caldera with a basket so I can see what it looks like. Come on you computer geniuses, don't let me be stupid.

How about mounting a basket on the back?

Check out this website. One basket mounts using leather straps.

Khoun, thanks for the link! But you know what? The American is cute and all but it's on a cruiser bike.
I don't know.....I really would like it but I still have my pride. I'm starting to think it would look cheesy on a mountain bike.

Forgot about Target! I'm off tomorrow, maybe I'll go check out what they have. Someone gave me a Target gift card for Christmas, too.

Picky picky... Chances are anything made of wood is bound to look a little cheesy on a MTB. Maybe a metal or ballistic-nylon basket instead? If you're willing to forgo the wicker then you might opt for a complete pet-carrier solution (you did say you wanted to carry a pet).

Try this link.

There's also this one but it requires a quick-release attachment.

siu blue,

nothing wrong with a basket imho--if it makes your bike more useful, go for it

good luck

Khoun, I like that pet one but I have an 80 Lab that won't fit into it. I just said the puppy thing because of the ET thing. Too bad that pet basket has a bracket. Don't want to put on a bracket.

Zig, thanks for the link. I'll check into that, too! They have a 'picka nit' basket, too!

here's one from Jitensha.com

http://jitensha.com/eng/basket_e.html

I think the one Khuon posted (the pet basket) is better, and probably more reasonably priced

I checked wallbike.com and their stuff was all pretty expensive

Eep! Yeah, you probably don't want to hang 80lbs worth of dog off the front of your bike. Although, I'm sure there's a basket rated for that if you're so inclined.

I'm willing to bet that any basket rated to carry anything more than a couple of pounds is going to require a fairly secure mounting system. The bracket is probably easily removable... maybe even with a quick-release. It looks like it goes on/off as easy as mounting a light.

Yeah, Zig. That's it. The picka nic basket. I think that pet carrier thing is more my speed. I betcha I can get away with not doing the bracket thing. It's more designed for mounting with those hi riser cruiser tall chopper handle bars. Of course I have to remove their "pet cruiser" insignia from the front of it. Hmmmmm.............And I can even use the cover/cage top thingy to keep things from bouncing out.

The leather straps look like they should be functional and can probably be used as an alternative to the bracket if you're not carrying anything heavy. You might want to verify with the company. I don't think the bracket was necessarily designed for hi-rise bars. I think it's a load-bearing issue.

Oh, okay, makes sense. I think I'll sleep on it and check it out more tomorrow. I can check with the company then. Thanks, everyone!

I've been seeing some bikes around with an unusual rear rack mounted on them. It was a like a pannier rack, but instead of pannier bags, it had big wire baskets. Half pannier rack, half shopping cart. The whole thing looked like it was made of alloy. Pretty neat.
I've looked for them, but haven't found them at the LBSs.

Shoot, walk up in there and tell them what you want. If they act like a bunch of holes, find another bike shop. There was an LBS I used to go to that the hard core cyclists would hit up for work done on their bikes. I had my hybrid, and he treated my hybrid the same way as that Trek Madone. But I would drop several thousand dollars a year on him too. Money talks. It shouldn't matter what you exchange that money for- wicker baskets, campy centaur, etc.... it should always be about good customer service and taking your money for the goods you want. If they can't deal, walk away and find a better bike shop.
