How do you become a mod?

Just wondering. A mod closed one of my threads (wawawawawawawawawawawaawaawaaaaaaaaaa) in RC.

Well not crying would be a good start .
Why do you want to be a mod? They have a tough job....all the work and very little of the fun.
Just think...you just complained about them for no good reason, do you want to deal with that all day?

Your thread getting locked wasn't your fault. If you want to place blame, look no further than the head RC troll and his entourage. Besides, that thread seemed to be an attempt at humor, anyway. At least, that was how your first post looked. And the reason I responded to it in the way I did...

It depends on the style of mod you want to be. For one particular style, for example, you need to practice your speed at closing down threads. It doesn't matter if its harmless, if YOU don't like it, you need to be able to close it within minutes of its opening.

I never said I wanted to be a mod, I just wanted to know how they come into being. And there's a difference between a red star and a blue star, right? So bribing the guy won't work...........

I was not crying; I was bawling.

It was a 50/50 attempt at humor and semi-usefulness.

Can you imagine what a nightmare it would be to be a mod on a site like this? Instead of just sticking to the 2 or 3 forums you enjoy, you'd be obligated to check all of them, and you'd have to read threads you would normally have no interest in looking at.

This is a high-traffic site, and the mods to a good job. They deserve our thanks.

Hey, I have nothing against mods. It was probably right to close that thread (though it was not my fault).

I really dunno, but think of what a garbage hole this place would be if there were no moderators.......................

lol, someone had to say that. Do you think the mods do a poor job?

I can't be a mod here. I only ever go into Foo and Road Cycling, and I'm way too much of a hothead.

The reason I think the mods here do a good job is because I came here from another cycling forum, where there is no active moderation of any kind. The place is full of trolls, and there's spam all over the place. If the General forum isn't full of money-making scams, it's full of religious debates (even though there's a seperate forum there for that). Sometimes there's 2-3 threads on the same topic, and there's no one around to merge them.

At times I think the mods here do get a little heavy-handed, but it's nothing like the aggravation we'd get if the mods didn't do anything.

+1 to that. I've been a mod on a small hobby website. IT was a lot of work and it was probably 1/10th the size of this site! Yikes!

+1 to pretty much everything above, the mods here are strict (sometimes a little bit too much for my taste) but i am very happy they do what they do and i think the mods are a major factor in this site being great.

Other tips (guesses actually) for anyone who would seriously want to be a mod:

Be helpfull and/or knowledgable and help other posters.
Post lots over a sustained period time.
Post in various forums and make sure you are 'seen' by a lot of the respected members and existing mods (and tell them you love their Bike/Avatar/posts .
Never insult or really argue with people on the boards.
Post original threads and posts.
Don't post anything too controversial.
Give props when they are due.
Make it plain that you are the computer/boards a lot anyways, due preference, work or circumstances.
Become a member first and possibly donate.

I could be wrong but i belive that certain mods tend to watchover certain sections of the forums.

Its not just 17 of them running around the forums randomly like chickens with their heads cut off
