spider solitaire, 4 suits. Just beat it, 500+ moves which is the closest I've ever come to losing and still been able to pull it off.

FYI, if your windows box does not have anything listed under games, it usually does NOT mean they are not there, but merely that the shortcuts under start|programs have been removed (this is microsoft's idea of "not installing" them).

Here's how to find them. They reside under your C:\WINDOWS directory somewhere. Often in the SYSTEM32 directory, but sometimes elsewhere (especially if they are "not installed" they're usually under a different subdirectory). Here are the file names to look for:

    SPIDER.EXE spider solitaire
    SOL.EXE solitaire
    FREECELL.EXE freecell
    WINMINE.EXE minesweeper
    MSHEARTS.EXE hearts

Pinball was the only one that is actually installed under Program Files so if you don't have games installed that one probably really isn't there. If you want to look for it, it's called PINBALL.EXE

Gotta go with minesweeper on this one. I used to play minesweeper for hours on end. I remember back when I used Windows 95, there was a file in the windows folder that let you edit all your minesweeper times and best scores. Whenever my brother beat one of my best times, I would just change it back. Good times...good times.

heh. You still can. I think they store 'em in the registry now, but you can still use regedit.

    A quote from wikipedia:
"In the most recent Windows version of Minesweeper, the high scores list has been moved into the registry. The keys for the current user are stored at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\winmine". This works on Windows XP."

To edit the registry, click Start, Run..., then type "regedit". Look out though, an amazing mix of completely trivial (I.E. minesweeper scores) and critically important (I.E. operating system settings) information is kept in the registry. Don't muck around with anything besides the minesweeper scores unless you know what you're doing.

Kind of amazing how large the page on minesweeper is actually:

I used to be into Solitaire. Then I started playing Free Cell. Now all I play is Mahjongg, which comes preinstalled with Ubuntu (FYI: ubuntu is a Linux distro)

My best (I'd have to check to be sure) is around 1050 for 4-suit spider solitaire. My best expert minesweeper is low 300's. I have a coworker who did it in 220 or 230.

Here's a tip. You have to use more logic than just "here's a 1 with only 1 un-stepped on box so that must be the mine". For example... assume you've got this:
    ---------------
    |a|b|c|x|x|x|
    ---------------
    |1|1|1|x|x|x|
    ---------------
    |#|#|#|x|x|x|
a, b, c, and x are blank squares, the three 1's you've exposed (the three #'s can be anything as long as they aren't mines). You know C cannot be a mine, right?

Because the 1 on the left only has two possibilities for where 1 mine can be: a and b. However, the second 1 says its mine can be a, b, or c. So the fact that the first "1" says a or b is a mine, and the second "1" says that out of a, b, and c, only one is a mine, that means c is not a mine. So you can step there.

    Likewise, if you had:

    ---------------
    |a|b|c|x|x|x|
    ---------------
    |1|2|#|x|x|x|
    ---------------
    |#|#|#|x|x|x|

That means c has to be a mine. Because out of a, b one of them is a mine, that only leaves c for the "2"'s second mine. You don't have to figure out (yet) whether a or b is the first mine to know that c is the second.
