not even sure i understand this, but o.k.

my dad's family is native American with some Irish (way back - the only reason we assume Irish is because of Irish given names and surnames preserved in the tribe), but my mom's is Scots-English. on my maternal grandfather's side, i'm a descendant of Peregrine White, while on my maternal grandmother's side, it was her grandfather who emigrated here (to the USA) to play professional football (soccer).

physically and personality-wise, i am closest to my Scots and Irish family heritage.

Wallace, Bruce, Pearse, Connolly, Plunkett, Collins, et. al.; all heros of mine.

that said, i love the English as well. for all the mistakes made by the Empire and her servants, there will always be an England.

Right you are, Britain refers to Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

My mum is straight British and my dad is "american", but has deep French roots.

Well as long as were talking about Rudyard Kipling, we learned this poem in Global History, about British, as well as some other countrys imperialism.

"White Man's Burden"

Take up the White Man's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.

Take up the White Man's burden--
In patience to abide,
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple,
An hundred times made plain
To seek another's profit,
And work another's gain.

Take up the White Man's burden--
The savage wars of peace--
Fill full the mouth of Famine
And bid the sickness cease;
And when your goal is nearest
The end for others sought,
Watch sloth and heathen Folly
Bring all your hopes to nought.

Take up the White Man's burden--
No tawdry rule of kings,
But toil of serf and sweeper--
The tale of common things.
The ports ye shall not enter,
The roads ye shall not tread,
Go mark them with your living,
And mark them with your dead.

I love Ireland, its my heritage. But I like Uk for football.lol.

I'm a quarter Scottish and I think my paternal grandmother is a good part English, so I guess I have the obligation to "say something here".

It's called a hard joke.

How is the UK going to go about putting teams together (for team sports) for the 2012 Olympics (since they automatically qualify for every sport)? Last I heard, Wales and Scotland didn't want to be part of a UK football team.

Off topic: Cricket and rugby should definitely be introduced as exhibition sports in 2012.

No joint football side. I don't know what they'll do for that - maybe it will just be the English side.

I don't know what they've done in the past for this either.

Cricket and Rugby have their own world cups so I feel there is no need for them to be included in the Olympics. I feel the same about football - as the football WC is the biggest sporting event anyway why do they bother having it as an olympic sport? I mean who cares who won it? I can't name any Olympic football champion team but I can name all the WC champion teams going back to 1930.

Ah, yes, there is some talk of England hosting the 2014 or 2018 WC's. That would be ridiculously stupendiciously flabbergastingly awesome.......

Oh, Johnny, just about every sport in the Olympics has it's own World Championship or World Cup, so why not ditch the whole operation altogether?

Oh, oh, pick me! The Olympics is for amateurs, not pros. It is the common ground that non-pros can compete on. And in case you don't know the definition of 'amateur athlete', it's 'an athlete that practices his chosen sport WITHOUT PERSONAL FUNDING'. Notice, the Olympics are made up of un-sponsored national teams, not clubs.

Sorry for ranting, just had to exercise the muscles..........................

100% Scot, Born in Edinburgh. we emigrated to Canada at the age of 12, I've been back and forth a few times but always return to Canada. The UK is a great place to visit for me but Canada is home.

I sit my citizenship test on Feb 7th, 1 day before my 44th birthday. I will hopefully be sworn in during the Canada day holiday.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only restriction in football nowadays is under 23, pro or not. Actually you'd be hard pressed to find any true amateurs in the Olympics anymore, at least major sports like track,swimmimg etc. Maybe some hammer throwers and lawn bowlers though.
Oh yeah and all the Canadians
