So here you're watching these (American) world class ahtletes at the Winter Olympics - and the sports they compete in on the highest level - behave like soap opera actors or petulant HS kids. Now compare that to an athlete like Lance Armstrong who competes in what is arguably a much tougher sport/event - and all he does is focus, behave with class, do the right thing, train 4-8 hours per day (like 11 months a year) AND win all the time (and ultimately that last element is less important the the ones preceeding it). Now there's something I can look up to.

The more I observe at this Hendrick/Davis skating squabble the worse Hendrick starts to look. There's another talented American kid who should shut the f up and just race. If he has a problem with Davis - I think he'd get more sympathy without all the negativity. Let everyone draw their own conclusions.

One wakeup call for Mr. Hendrick is that he'll find that unlike Bode Miller, a marquee world class SKIER - he participates in speed skating - that's not exactly a sport brimming over with big endorsement dollars and mass participation like downhill skiing. Miller? That misguided party boy is set for life. Hendrick? He'll be lucky if that shiny gold medal isn't hanging from the rearview mirror of his pickup truck in 2 years. At least it will look nice next to the scented pine tree : ).

One other note- how can I have respect for a buffoon like B. Miller - who skis with a slight beer gut - and appears to train less than me - a middle aged hack amateur bike racer who does it for FUN? Please. The fact that he has all that remarkable talent - frankly it seems wasted on a guy like him. And that makes him harder to take.

Get a clue boys. Shut up and ski/skate - or ride your bike.

Really makes you appreciate just how hard the pros like Lance work and train.

There are some athletes at this years olympics that would have had a better chance of winning if they stayed home. Kinda funny how someone like Lance can make you think "I guess I am not working that hard after all".

For all the grief the idiots on pages like this give Lance - as time goes by you'll miss his exciting ass, and he'll look better and better. And totally untouchable. He was created by a unique combination of genetics/circumstance/motivation that we won't see again. Not a chance.

Just watch.

I gotta give it out to some of those downhill skiiers though...They open themselves up to have some serious injuries. I was glad to see Liggity (sp?) win. They build Bode Miller up alot, although he certainly does have talent it just got annoying. With Hendrick/Davis, it sucks that the media is hounding both of them for reactions...I mean, when Davis won the gold last night, he asked him how important it was to at least beat Hendrick???? How obvious is it that they are trying to make these guys say the wrong thing?

Also....sad commercial. "Home Depot is prould to emply the most former Olympic and paraolympic athletes" how depressing would it be to train all your life for that, and not end up with the endorsements that make the stars rich?

Davis won SILVER. The Italian won the gold. Hendrick took Bronze.

This is who needs to STFU...

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

Hummm...I'd say we have a racist here. Bet he's not much on bike racing either...I wonder why.

Sometimes Bryant is on the money. And sometimes he's a bonehead with racial overtones. Like on his Winter Olympic opinion. Take it from whence it comes.

davis started it by not being a teammate, not travelling with the team, his mom wearing the colors of Holland (not the US) <Deutschbank sponsors Davis>

davis is a pud, and started it. calling Hendrick a phony (because he's an actor) and not shaking his hand.

Davis is the instigator and a bad seed. Hendrick is just reacting.
Sad.

And here I thought he serves as a self-motivating inspiration to millions of disadvantaged kids. A 'bad seed'?

Bode Miller might be construed as a 'bad seed' (although he's really just a bonehead who drinks too much beer). Hendrick is coming off as a self centered putz. To me Davis just went to Torino and took care of business. The 'team event'? Please. WHAT 'team'? What the hell did they ever do for HIM? Oh that's right, jack **** NOTHING. And if Davis had been too punked out for his marquee event two days later after his efforts to help others win a medal he would have gotten crap for that too.

Bryant Gumble must have been in hair and make-up or simply thought he was above having to read the memo explaining that the Olympic Winter Games are made up of events that are Northern European in origin. You think he will spout off about the Summer Games because there are not a lot of fair skined Northern Europeans competing in the track and field events.

Just thought I'd point out it's "Hedrick", not "Hendrick". Although "Chad Hendrix" would be cool.

But who cares, let's talk about Sasha Cohen's flexibility instead.

I would. But I don't want to get banned from the forum.

Here is one big differance. The Olympics is the pinnicle of AMATURE sports. And yes, sometimes it shows.

A few of the athletes are asses (like Davis). But, the media finds anything and tries to make a circus out of it.

It took many years (and Cancer) for Lance to acquire the qualities you describe. The character called maturity. I think it's fair to allow these kids the same space and consideration.

Sasha is quite flexible isn't she?

When did men's long track speed skating get all diva-y? That whole thing between Davis and Hedrick is utter crap. Hedrick wanted Davis to skate in the team pursuit, an event that hadn't been tried at the Winter Games. No one had any idea what it would do to their own events. So Davis didn't want to play. So what? Hedrick needed Davis to win the team pursuit, but he never wanted Davis on his team.

My theory is that they've been dating secretly for the last three years, and this 'spat' has nothing to do with speed skating.

agreed. from what i hear lance was quite the rabble rouser when he was younger.

oh and did anyone notice how worn out bode miller looked after the giant slalom run? i thought a stretcher was going to be needed to carry him off at the end. none of the following racers looked as tired or worn.

You know the one sport I did earn a lot of respect for? Nordic combined cross-country skiing. 18 miles + in just over an hour. Switching styles halfway through. Imagine running a race in which you had to jump off your road bike and start bombing a mountain bike through the woods halfway through. And I thought cyclists had big legs! They have to be the best athletes in the winter games IMO.

Sorry about that. The italian had one hell of a last lap no? Those speed skaters have a short lifespan, Joey Cheek is retiring and he's 27 I think? Those guys better live up their time in the spotlight while they can.

Go watch a cyclocross race and you won't have to imagine.

Now if those biathalon guys did a xcountry ski race and then starting shooting at EACH OTHER - (like they do in Croatia for example) - THEN you'd have something exciting to watch on NBC...
