Austin sights and attactions - indoors/outdoors

Calling all our Austin, Tx members!

I'm thinking of taking a trip down your way with my fiancee in early March (likely 8th-11th or so) and trying to come up with a good list of things to do while in town. We'll likely be caming at a near by Texas State Park (any suggestions on which?) or other camping grounds. Difficulty - no bikes. I know I know, coming all the way to Austin w/o the bike is just wrong - but she doesn't ride and this will be the last visit with her before the wedding in May so I want to show her a great time with her. Thanks!

Ummmm There is San Antonio, and the river walk. Its a 90 mile drive but could definitely be worth it.

Austin's the cultural center of the universe, man.

Or so I hear.

Wish I could help...I could show you where the lab was...

That's what I hear too. And after passing through it for one reason or another for the last several years of living in the cultural wasteland of Dallas I'd like to make a good trip of it.

Coming to Austin w/ no bike! It's blasphemy!! Texas state parks around here...hmm I dunno. I know how some cool other places to camp to experience the hill country without ten million other people. I'm sure while you're here you'll want to hit up Chuys for some tex-mex and Hills Cafe for a burger. Always music, just find a the Chronicle outside any eattery and look in there. UT Baseball I'm sure has a game you could check out. What are your interests man.

FreeridinLoon - I know, I'd love to throw the mtb, the road bike, or both in the back of the truck on the way that direction. But I fear if I got on the trails or roads down there I wouldn't be seen by the GF for a full day or two. Chuys is a good suggestion to hit for food, been to the Dallas location and it's mighty tasty.

Calling all you Austinites............

Centuries ago when I was a student at UT there was a german, I think old time restaurant, maybe somewhere near downtown where we could go for CHEAP beer and moderately good food
Usually went there in the last week before our GI checks arrived and we were down to our last 5 bux
Can't remember the name but the building was decades old decades ago, any help and is it still there?

Ok, pop over to Enchanted Rock State Park, about 80 miles west as I recall. It's a huge granite batholith [like Stone Mountain in Atlanta]. Road runners, Indian artifacts, hot as Hell. Pretty cool.

On the way back, visit the Lyndon Johnson homeplace in Johnson City [of all places] and then get some sauerbraten in Fredericksburg.

Back in town, go to one of the Threadgills restaurants. . .the best Texas dining! Oh, Oh. . .and then go out to the County Line for Texas barbeque.
