Refurbished Laptops

After 5 years my computer is dying and I'm not sure if I can get it fixed or what. The part where the AC adapter comes in smells funny and I can't get any power. Anyone know if that's something that could be fixed for cheap?

Anyway, I'd rather spend money on bikes than on computers and I don't care about having the latest technology. My only requirement is that I need a laptop and I need an ethernet network adapter. Other than that I don't really care. Has anyone ever bought a refurbished computer? I've been looking at retrobox.com and it looks pretty interesting. Anyone have any other good sites? I'm usually a big eBay fan but I don't know squat about computers, so I'd rather not press my luck there.

A used Thinkpad, T series, will usually do you right.

I hauled around a T20 for 4 years, 2 of those biking to school daily. Used daily at home and all day at school, thrown around, etc. It still works like new. You can't go wrong.

What kind of budget are you contemplating? Why not just buy a cheap new laptop? They're pretty cheap now.

I'd rather spend $1000 on a used Thinkpad than spend $1000 on a new HP or Dell notebook.

previous-generation computers are always the best deal around. you can get a P4-2.0ghz desktop for $250, a 1.8gz centrino laptop for about $500.

That's just what I did two years ago and I have never regretted it.

Since the OP is in Toledo, I'll mention that I've seen really good deals on used and new computers around Toronto. I have no idea why, maybe just because it's the biggest market around.

Outside Thinkpads, I probably wouldn't touch a refurb laptop with a 10 foot pole. I have a service contract with my current (HP) laptop and while I was having some issues with it I nearly got a new one out of them. At which time I stated in no uncertain terms that I would not accept a refurb - period.

My current laptop is was a refurb. It's a Toshiba. I have yet to have a single problem with it.

Do you work for a corporate company that does the standard 3-year lease on computers? They often have a plan where you can buy computers that came off the lease for dirt cheap. I recently got a P4 2.5 GHz with 80Gb Hard drive and 512 Mb memory for $130.

That could be possible...but likely very inconvenient.

Unfortunately, they're stock is VERY erratic...quite unpredictable. Best bet is to do it locally (probably similar things for most corporate companies) with your company or somebody you know who works for a corporate type company.
