What would you do??

Work Situation
Okay about a year ago a former Paralegal worked at my office who didn't care for me. I over see all of the Paralegals in my office. Well anyhoo when she quit she left a real nasty note in my desk for me. It called me a few foul names etc.
Well today I get an email from her today asking for my help with something. My boss said not to help her.
I'm thinking hey you were mean to me, why should I help you??

What would you do.

I would help her, but that's because I'm the type of person who enjoys helping people and I try to handle work professionally even if it hurts. Of course that would depend upon what type of help the person is asking for. E.g. if it is employment, etc then no I wouldn't. I might also have problems writing recommendations unless the person actually was a decent worker and we just didn't get along.

I think this is also may be a per sex thing, as I've noticed that guys seem to be able to recognize achievements even if they don't like the other person.

I'd send her an e-mail back and tell her that the note she left was hurtful, and that the boss said I shouldn't bother. If she replies with something that makes you want to help her, do it. If not, forget it. If she was two-faced and manipulative while she was there, there's almost nothing she could do to persuade me though.

If the help involves writing some sort of recommendation for her, don't dare go against what your boss said.

Good luck.

As much as my vindictive side says to throw her to the dogs....my logical side that believes in karma says you should help her (if its something easy) just for the good karma.

Then again...maybe her needing your help in the first place is her bad karma from the note she left you. Maybe you should throw her under the bus!

The fact that she was to much of a chicken **** to tell you off to your face, then comes back and wants your help speaks volumes about her personality. Sounds to me like shes a real manipulative b****. I'd say she didn't just burn the bridge behind her, she set up charges and blew it away. Screw her.

Well I sent her the info she requested ONLY cause she is really good friends with another office employee here and that person is out on vacation. I didn't write anything in the email except for the info she was looking for.
But the whole time I'm thinking to myself "YOU SUCK"

No worries, Snowy. If you ever need a favor from her later, she owes you one. You can remind her that

Unless you have ethical issues I would make her pay for this one and pay big. Let her know that it's because you helped, despite the note. This way she learns more about personal diplomacy and you make good on a professional investment. Everybody wins.

I'd have scanned the note (if I still had it), and emailed it to her in lieu of her requested help.

I personally don't think that's a very professional approach, but I'm not sure what goes into paralegal and what type of requests for help peoplo often times make.

I read some quote lately, the gist of which was:

In the end, you may regret many things in your life, but you will never regret being kind.

What exactly was she asking for? Was the reason your boss said not to give it to her was because he/she made the call that he/she did not want that info released for professional reasons? If so, you have seriously breached your ethical duties, and she has used you to get around your boss to obtain the info she needs. I would not have chanced it in that situation

If its something trivial that you know your boss will not care about, then I would feel good about it. If she was sincerely asking for a favor and not playing you, you showed her what a stand up person you are and that will make her feel much more remorse over the note she wrote you than any verbal retort you could have given her.
