The moral: students will sit on ANYTHING.
had a vacuum cleaner and did the same thing put it out in the trash and the next day it was gone
funny part is it did not work
One of my friends found a 52 inch rear projection TV sitting next to a dumpster. Can't get much more obvious than that, but apparently it didn't occur to him until he lugged it up the stairs to his apartment that it would inevitably be broken.
Bought a house a while back that had vintage 70's green, yellow and red carpet. It was very high quality carpet and in good shape. However, since there was GREAT hard wood flooring underneath (don't ask - I have no idea why someone would have covered it up), and the - ahem, colors - didn't suit me, I ripped it all up the day I closed on the house. Put it out at the end of the driveway and within 3 hours, every scrap was gone.
Take the frame apart & roll up the futon mattress, problem solved.
As for trash finds, I've found lots of good stuff in the trash. The latest find was a stainless steel microwave stand that goes for $75 at Target. It was missing two small black clips that keep it stable, but I scavenged them from the utensil holder (which I wouldn't use) on it, so now our microwave no longer sits on the floor.
I once found a knock-off Wassily Chair in the trash. I had it for a couple years, and a few months ago I set it out near the trash, since we had no use for it anymore. About a month later, my wife and I were at our new neighbor's loft, and he had the chair in his bathroom.
Just last night we passed on a wood end table with drawer that is in the trash. It doesn't go with any of our other furniture.

Yeah, when I was in college we furnished half my first apartment from things abandoned by students who had graduated and were leaving their stuff behind. The best way to go was to hang out near the international dorms as they abandon even more furniture than the local students do.Originally Posted by RedHairedScot
The best find yet was a Dell computer tower with no monitor and a busted hard drive. For $100 we replaced the hard drive and turned into a server for the house. I'm not sure what happened to it after I left but I'm sure someone out there is enjoying all those television shows, movies, mp3's and baddly dubbed asian porn clips.
