S.O. and I went on a late, midnight full-moon hike Sat. night. We went up Milcreek and hiked up the Grandeur Peak trail. The moon was huge and bright, and everything was visible and bathed in silver.
We were reaching near the top when suddenly we both stopped. I felt a low, deep creaking resonate through me. It was long and dragged out and very deep and very loud. I've never heard anything like it in my life.
I asked bf what it was, and he was quiet for a moment. He thought it might have been his own heartbeat because the frequency was so deep and so low that it vibrated right through us. I said I was turning around and he followed me back down the path.
He asked me what I thought I heard and I told him it sounded like growling. A low, deep growling. I was so scared! I don't think I've ever been more scared in my life! That cat had to have been so close to us for its growl to be so loud and to resonate in us like that. All I wanted to do was to get back to the car.
He said we should keep talking and then he told me he thought it was what I thought I heard. It had to be. What else could it be? The good thing is that it did growl at us. We had obviously gotten to close to it and we have threatened it. If it was going to attack us, it probabaly would not have warned us like that.
I'm so glad I wasn't alone and that I had s.o. with me. He stayed calm and knew what to do. If I was by myself I probably would have freaked out started running.
So yeah, beware of very large cats and always carry your cat spray. And don't hike alone!
