Cell phones at the gym

Is it really necessary for the rest of us to listen to your conversation, as you are laying on your belly pretending to stretch, about how you bought a dress for $2500 this weekend? Or insulting your personal trainer while you yak it up on your cell, ignoring them?

Saw a woman the other day on the elliptical trainer with her cell glued to her ear for over half an hour while she was working out. OK.....

I get enough working out from construction so I haven't gone to a gym in years, but I do have a similar annoying story involving cell phones. I was at an extremely rich and stuck up Mall called Summerset in Troy Michigan doing remodeling work. There was a girl who couldn't have been older than 12 who came by herself in a strech limo. I saw her get back into the limo, and she was complaining to her friend on her phone that her parents had only given her $350 to go shopping. Its not that it annoyed me that this girl was set for life because of being born lucky, it was the fact that she saw me dirty and wearing a tool belt and gave me this look that implied she thought she was better than me.

I am so super important that I do not need to be tethered to a telephone at all times. If someone needs to reach me, let them leave a message and a damn good reason for me to return their call.

I go to a district (public) swimming pool/gym. Telephones are not allowed in the locker room. The only time I've seen anything close to an offense was basically a conversation long enough for the guy to say "I'll call you back."

These phones are a damn nuisance. They're in restaurants, trains, even toilets! I wish we could develop some anti-cell strategy for those who insist on sharing the details of their lives with those of us who don't need or want to know. Maybe a song we can all start singing real loud to drown out the conversation, one hopes, at both ends of the connection.

it annoys me too... dumb teenage girls who sit on the exercise mats and yak about stupid crap with their friends. In general, i don't know why people don't WANT to leave their phones behind for five minutes. ANd truly, i am not interested in hearing eveyrone's conversation. I also notice when people yak on the cell while working out they don't get much of a workout.

EVen weirder, some guy had his cigarettes and lighter at the gym... he left them on a windowsill with his cellphone. Obviously not smoking them in the gym... but it made me wonder, sure defeats the purpoose. It was one of the bodybuilder guys- they just bulk up and then puff outside. The thing is you're not supposed to to bring cellphones to the gym, but no one seems to notice that sign. However, everyone seems to make a big deal if you're like 2 minutes late getting off the trainer. WUWT?

I agree. I'm one of the rare teenagers that's gone through 3 cellphones, the current one I have was laying behind my bed for a good 4 months before I remembered to recharge it. Its one of those pay card phones. I hate being attached to a phone or even talking on one. It makes me mildly nervous. I do appreciate txt messaging though, especially when it was unlimited.

I'm in a strangely cynical mood right now...

It's their loss more than yours. They're the one spending whatever ridiculous amount per month on a gym membership and a zillion minute cell-phone plan so they can miss out on the world around them (or maybe have it catch them unaware if they keep the conversation up for the car ride home) and not actually get a workout. However, simply learning to ignore things that bug you would also be a good thing for you, and if it really bugs you, just point and laugh and say "sucker" in response to the $2500 comment. She'll get indignant, but I bet she won't be noisy afterwards (although maybe it was her wedding dress, in which case, that's probably not that incredibly much).

Michigander, it's kind of a bad habit to assume because someone happens to have a funny look on their face as they look in your direction that they are thinking ill of you...or even noticing you. I've had moments where a funny joke or weird memory comes to mind and I involuntarily smile or make a subtle face only to notice someone in the direction I'm facing looking towards me. It makes me think, "I hope they didn't think I was smirking at them." Not to mention, she may actually have assumed she was more civillized, cooler, or in some other way better than you based on appearance, but by the same token you assumed she was haughtier than you. Or maybe she didn't like the construction noise or clutter or some other stupid and shallow but basically harmless 12 year old concern.

I think I can figure out a strategy for the last case.

Maybe she gave you a bad look because it was obvious you were eavesdropping on her conversation.

we have so many complaints at work ( restaurant business) about cells that we are considering asking people to turn them off. It is unreal the amont of people who carry a loud conversation regardless of folks trying to enjoy a romantic night out, Ive seen people telling the wait staff to "hold On" while they were trying to say the specials so they could take a phone call.. rude rude rude...

All the gyms I've been to in the UK have signs telling people that phones aren't to be used in the gym. I'm really surprised that's not a constant throughout the world!

What we need more than that though is a "Would you cool the jets on your anti-perspirant please? The guy standing behind you doesn't appreciate a facce full of 'Sure' first thing in the morning. Spray - don't douse."

(Sorry, went off topic a bit there. I share your pain with the phone thing for restuarants, poker games, toilets and cinemas though).

The signs are there, they just choose to ignore them.

I'm guessing a lot of you aren't in school anymore, but that is another place where it is getting out of hand. I'm paying good money to go to a lecture just to have these clowns with obnoxious 50 cent ringtones go off every class. Sometimes they will get up and answer the phone, talking while they make their way to the door. I finally snapped and yelled at one girl. Her phone rang and I said, "If that thing rings again I am going to drown it in your @#$% double latte!"

Don't worry... the quality of a camera phone photo will basically make any picture blurry enough for FCC approval.

I guess I still don't understand why someone talking on a cell is no different than two people talking to each other. Why does this bother people so much?

I think it's kind of humorous. Kind of like being around a bunch of crazy people talking to themselves.

Either way, I tune them out...I gotta bench 100# today!

Its especially annoying to the lecturer.
Many instructors have had to create a list of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors during class.
Does it help? Usually. The consequences for those that don't comply? Try negotiating with the insrtuctor for better grade on a paper or exam!

I appreciate the replies from restaurant people. You are a captive audience to rude people.

Cells are just one more way for people to be rude. Instead of signs that say don't do this and don't do that, we just need signs that say no rude people allowed. But I'd probably get throw out of a lot of places too.

Because they're jealous or they're really really old timers and have not adjusted to the times. Now a day's people's talking on the phone doesn't bother me. The only thing that bother's me is people butting in thinkint that I need to have a cell phone on me at all times despite the fact that I am never on call, nobody ever calls me and the few times they might call me I'll not be able to answer them. So stay the **** out of my business and leave me a lone. .
