do you like your job, or, my two days with a Dino...

so, i really like my job. i hated my old one, but this one is fantastic.

i've just spent the past two days working on and driving a '68 Dino 246 GTS, getting it properly fettled for the owner to use it. the car had been in storage for almost five years, and only has 36k kilometers on the odometer. but after i got done with it, it was awe-inspiring. i've driven newer Ferraris (all 512TRs), and haven't been that impressed - but the Dino has changed my mind. the scream of that quad-cam V6 right behind the small of your back is unbelieveably addicting - once the 'box and tyres get warmed up, nothing exists but the road ahead. only bad thing is, once i fixed it, it had to go back.

but that's o.k.; this afternoon, i got to tear down the top end of a Land Rover for a gasket replacement. actually very fun, believe it or not. i've also got a mid-80s R-R Silver Spirit i'm doing an A/C overhaul on, and Frank Sinatra's last car (Bentley Turbo R) came in on a flatbed for some minor repairs. every day is something new to work on, and usually it's either vintage, exotic, or both. the most "pedestrian" cars we service are MGs and Land Rovers - and even those are cool.

this is the only job i've had that i enjoy as much as my days as a bike shop wrench.

so, does anyone else have a job, new or old, that they thoroughly enjoy? i know there are lots of folks who hate their jobs; i used to be one of them. i'd just like to hear about anybody else who likes theirs...

I loved it when I woked for a start-up.

I was a electronic technician, working the manufacturing line as my primary job, but my "auxillary duties" were asst datacenter admin, customer support (field service), training, hardware development, failure analysis, intrusion analysis (basically, i figured out who, when , and how someone hacked into any of the servers we sold, then provided the evidednce to the proper authorities...this was a very rare occurance, only happened twice while I was there).

I was working ridiculous hours...pretty much I slept there during the week, but loved every last second of it, since there was not a single day that I was not absolutely awestruck at the sheer amount of knowledge that I was obtaining from all of this.

I love my current job - and have loved most of my jobs - but there have been jobs that I hated. Photo tech at K-Mart. It was mostly selling electronics that I knew nothing about and was an exercise in getting used to people screaming in my face for pictures the overnight service (which was outsourced) lost. Not fun.

I'm told Photo at k-mart or wal-greens was supposed to be a "fun" job

I had one of these in my charge for 5 years when the owner moved overseas. It was barely two years old when I took possession with full privileges. He visited about twice a year, and and also sent a few clients over for a daysail. It was more of a parttime job.

When I was a kid in school I used to sketch boats all over the margins of my notebooks. Now I work for myself designing boats, so I guess I have my dream job. The commute isn't bad either, I just walk from one room to the next as I work from home. I try not to tell people I only work 3-5 hours a day though as they kinda get jealous! My wife's coworkers can't believe I go for a ride every morning, BEFORE I get to work. Now that summer is here, I get to spend a lot of time with our 9 year old as well, so I can't complain!

Whoever told you that lied - and they lied big.
