Why do you ask? I was a teamster for 21 years. Most of my union friends, still have many, are spending their weekends at gunshows and NASCAR. A few biked, very few. The ones I bike with are usually biking on Harleys. You'll find very few blue collar union guys/gals willing to spend any time or money on bicycling. Good luck on your search.

The only cyclists I know at my hospital are union, for what it's worth.

Moving this to Foo and later to P&R, if necessary.

Some grad students across this nation have started talking about unionizing. That hasn't happened here, and the way we're treated here, there's no reason to even think about it. We like having minimal beaurocracy. Plus, what would we gain? We're already getting among the highest stipends. Our benefits are already the best. We already have a strong voice in running the place. We get all the resources we could possibly need to be able to compete against the finest around the world. We have no teaching responsibilities. Can't imagine a better environment for being a grad student.

I'm Union. I hate seeing all those Confederate flags on pick-up trucks.

Actually, I am a salaried employee. Unions can be good. Unions can go a little too far. Hope yours is doing right by you.

United Steelworkers, staff lawyer. We have a sheltered bike rack outside our national headquarters building and a shower in the basement. Aside from its work to get its members enough $ to afford a bike, this Union treats those of us who commute by bike very well.

I just got in a union. I'm not saying which one because it could easily identify me, but for the first time ever, I am now in a union.

Are you in a union Siu?

I say to those working people who shun the unions: "It's just you alone against the corporation
and the economic system. With those odds you don't stand a chance. Don't let the propaganda
you've absorbed, and taken for absolute truth, come between you and a better life for your
family."

I done my duty. If any be offended, I apologize.

Heh. I've seen more unions break more companies and break the spirits of more workers across America. I don't need no stinking union to stand up for me and I don't need no stinking union to take all the damn money and provide jack **** for stuff, or tell me to go on strike beause they dont like a company's policy.

I DIDNT INSTIGATE. I MERELY RESPONDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't wish to argue, but I will point out my dads experience with the Detroit Teachers union. In a successful attempt to force a strike, then Governer John Engler and his buddy's offered up a contract with reduced pay and a useless but mandatory 2 hour after school planning period. The detroit federation of teachers was and still is the most powerful union in michigan. They forced a reasonable contract.

Under I believe Bush's no child left behind act, some detroit schools have been taken over by non union teachers and administrators because of bad test scores. The problem is, you won't get purely stellar grades in the middle of the ghetto. Its unreasonable to grade inner city kids the same way with the same material as suburban kids get, but thats how its done. Those schools have gotten much worse. If you ask me, the DFT is the only good thing detroit schools have going.

On the subject of John Engler, I don't remember what company it is, but he became vice president of this large corporation after leaving the governers office. Of course they pay him millions, and he never does much. Coincidentaly, he gave them tens or maybe it was hundreds of millions in contracts while he was governer. Bottom line is, I am proud of the detroit teachers union for making him kiss their asses.

On the other hand we have construction unions. I am in one now, but I have in the past been very satisfied working for non union company's, and I have found that non union jobs have far less bull**** rules to worry about. Although, the thing I must mention is that the union job I have now is the highest paying job I've ever had.
