Misspelling your name

When someone misspells your name in an email, do you correct them?

There are two common spellings of my first name. Over the years, I've grown accustomed to people spelling it wrong. I am often surprised that they continue to do so in email correspondence, despite my signature featuring my first name in BIG BOLD LETTERS. Today a new hire started. This person stands above me in the hierarchy , yet I'm tempted to correct them because when I don't, people just continue to make the mistake over and over......

any of you share this problem?

Not me per se.....but one of my co-worker's names is "Deric" spelled with c.

We worked together on a project where our lead would send out emails to us together and every time he sent an email Deric was spelled differently.

Derik
Derick
Dericc
Dereck
Derek
etc....

We both used to laugh at how bad the lead's spelling ability and ability to remember things and be a "people person" were.

I have a first and last name that are commonly misspelled and mispronouced... oh well, if it's important I will correct if not, then I don't. Or what I have commonly done is when I get a chance, away from others I will say "btw, my name is...." Usually the person is grateful. Also if meeting someone in person, I always extend my hand and say my name first, so the person doesn't have to think or try to say my name (wrong). If the error is in writing then I figure when I respond the person will see the correct spelling.

I gave up on correcting people. My first name is Allen, and there are more variations of spelling it than any other name I know.
Allen, Allan, Alen, Alan, Allyn, Alyn, Ealyn..........just a few of the spellings I've run across.

No one ever misspells "Bob". Change your name to Bob.

People misspell my last name all the time. I only correct them when it is for something important like documentation or something. Otherwise its no biggie.

My name doesn't get mixed up too much. I do get people (freely) exchanging my first and last names. Lucky me with two first names....

My last name is German, very unusual, and has that wonderful German "sch" in the middle. I spell my name s l o w l y so it will be taken down correctly, then I pronounce it.

People typically leave off the "c", but some wonderful variations have occurred.

If it's important, like a legal document or something where money could be involved, I'll have it corrected. Otherwise, whatever...

One of the most creative spellings occured on, of all things, an award with my name engraved on it. I guess there was no time to check the spelling!

Not only is my name ALWAYS misspelled, but it's more associated with a man's name than a woman so you can imagine the surprise and emabarassment the other party goes through when they meet me in person. I'm so used to it that it doesn't bother me at all. A part of life for me. I just wonder why some parents would name their kids with opposite sex names (mine is actually a very ethnic name that was shortened, as is a lot of American names, and thus sounds like a male name).

people constantly misspell/mispronounce my name... I'll correct anyone three times, no problem, it's kinda difficult... But after that, it's an intelligence barometer and I tell 'em... 'just call me sprocket'

Some people try to get cute and spell my name "Wil" instead of "Will". Our real estate agent keeps spelling my wife's name "Kristy" instead of "Christy". Hopefully our son will not have the same sort of issues because we're going to call him by his initials.

D.O.H. or D.U.H. ?

(Sorry. I'm sure your son's name will never be misspelled, misheard, or whatever. I just couldn't resist.)

People are always throwing in an extra letter in my first name: John instead of Jon

People are always leaving out a letter in my last name: Fisher instead of Fischer.

Suppose it balances...

My last name used to be very hard to spell/pronounce. Got married, problem solved. Not going to work for you, Bryan. My suggestion is that you stop caring, even though I totally understand why you do. But it's never going to change. People who care will spell it right, people who don't, won't.
