Anybody here affected by the new ROHS directive?

This must be a kick in the balls for some people, are you affected?

It's not just been a kick in the balls for me.

It's been being anally violated with a 12 foot long spiked cast iron ***** with batman's head as the tip....while on fire, along with having suicide bombers attack my genitals, and then having my chest and pit hairs ripped out one by one.

Right now we are over a month back in non-RoHS production because we are not allowed to buy non-RoHS stuff since the initiative went active over a month ago.

Nothing sucks more than going to work 12hrs/6days a week just to sit around and twiddle your thumbs for 5 of those days, with full knowledge that it's going to be 7-days a week and a shift change to get what's needed done once we do get the parts.

Well, you can still sell non Rohs stuff within the states though. I just bought some 60/40 lead solder from Radioshack, so it must be. I desoldered an IC with some non lead solder that was there, it was pretty nasty.

You need higher temps to work with lead-free solder.

Problem for me is I work in an electonics fab plant, so we have to deal with internal policies fouling things up....I do understand it's for the best, but sheesh, it's such a pain in the rump.

It hasn't been a huge deal for us. We have been in the process of designing all new electronics for the past year, so the RoHS bit has been just one more check in the process. Almost all parts manufacturers have been moving to RoHS for a while now, so there have only been a few parts where coming up with a RoHS compliant part has been an issue.
Actually, the biggest problem has been that some customers specifcally don't want RoHS compliant solder, so we have a small number of boards stuffed using the old lead based stuff.

Theres a good quote from the owner of Gecko Drive.com
"Put into perspective: We consume a 500g tub of solder paste to produce 1,000 drives. The paste alloy is 63% Sn, 37% Pb. This means a single drive has 0.185 grams or 0.0065 oz of lead in it. That is a 2.5mm or 0.1" cube of lead per drive."

I never realized lead was such a big problem with electrical devices, batteries use something like 80% of all manufacturered lead. Theres a few metal recycling facilities around here that actually take old circuit boards to reuse the heavy metals in the boards.

Well RoHS was not just about lead, but other substances as well, like Cadmium. Pretty much it's to avoid having as much toxic electrical waste as possible in the future...less of this crap in the landfills, less of it that could possibly seep into underground water sources.

It's a great idea, it's just that too many companies have slept on it, instead of acting, and now they are freaking out over it.

It's bad enough that even labels have to be compliant...since some of the inks used may contain some restricted substances.

Over were we have a problem with a vendor that has been slacking....it's casued us to cease all european shipments on this one line until september....to me that's beyond ridiculous. Then we have all the "this is compliant" 'no it's not' "well the esystem says" 'the system can go to hell, shiny solder = lead solder...the system is about as right as michael jordan can play baseball' moments.

Really, if you have a twisted enough sense of humor, it's a neverending stream of comedy gold....but if you are living it...sucks to be you.
