ESPY Awards/Lance - a new media low

First off, I'm a big fan of Lance Armstrong but of course if you watched the ESPY Awards TV show that only makes it tougher. The most tasteless, sophmoric, idiotic and low-brow embarrassment I can remember seeing in many years. Astonishing, really.

Just brutal. Who were the morons @ ESPN who thought it was a good idea to make anal sex jokes on national TV? Calling the entire French soccer team a-holes was just friggin brilliant too. That should make it fun for Lance when he appears in France @ the Tour this week, eh? The alleged 'comedy' bits with Will Ferrel and Ben Stiller weren't even funny. I would have thought that a company as flush with cash as ESPN would have been able to hire a few script people who can write their way out of a paper bag. Apparently not.

Not really. Just watched the show last night on Tivo. I figured it might be bad after I heard the French soccer team 'joke' recounted in the media. But I never imagined it could have been THAT bad.

These types of comments from Armstrong does not surprise me at all, although I am quite prepared to put most of the blame on ESPN and its writers. I have never been a huge fan of Lance but I have always admired him for his courage and determintaion. This has got to be one of the lowest moments in ESPN's history and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I saw bits and pieces of it. Some I thought was humorous, others were bad. The Will Ferrell, singing bit with the space man was bad. I thought Lance did a decent job. He was good on SNL.

As a public figure, never say anything you don't mean, not even tongue in cheek, or in humor.

Still, can't be any worse than the stuff the Republican's President says.

the more i learn about lance and his career, the more i admire his guts and courage and tremendous accomplishments, but the less i admire about his thoughts and statements about anything other than cycling and finding a cure for cancer....

Do you think that Jay Leno, David Letterman, Johnny Carson all write or wrote their own material and meant it? I think not, they are just delivering what the writer wrote and the producers think would be funny. I agree it was not in his best taste, but I guess you could say he was doing what he was paid to do. I could understand if he did mean it though since he has taken so much crap from the French.

What a bunch of righteous B.S. Where have you people been living? Did you look into the audience and see who he was talking to? Wake up! This is the world we live in. Half the audience looked like pimps and gangsta's.

Personally, I never have really been a big Lance fan. I also have been on record saying most of his TV appearances weren't all that funny. In fact i said that he is NEVER funny. That was until the other night at the ESPY'S. He was awesome. He nailed several good jokes and I think endeared himself to a new crowd, including me.

He gave a very eloquent speech about cancer and the Jimmy V foundation. The audience was very captivated and you could tell it hit home. I tivo'd the entire show so maybe some of you didn't see it all? Either way, i think it is ridiculous in this day and age to be blaming Lance for the material that was used. It wasn't that vulgar by today's standards. Nothing different than you would see on Leno or Letterman. Sure you wouldn't have seen it on Johnny Carson, but again those days are gone, regrettably so.

+1

BTW - Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro split. You think that wink and a nod at the begining of the show was a coincidence?

Hmmmm....

Lance and Carmen. He does have a thing for the blonds.

I watched the whole thing and thought it was one of the best awards shows I have ever seen. I think Brokeback Mountain jokes were pretty played out, even before the film came out, but I've heard worse and don't think it was out of line.

You must have some high expectations for an entity that calls itself a sports network, then wastes airtime showing bowling and card games but basically ignores the MLS and all forms of competitive cycling.

+1 for the MLS props.

What should we expect for someone who spent so many years on drugs.
