Hail, Chickens, and Earthquakes

We've been having crazy weather this afternoon. The sky went black at around 5, followed by a crazy storm with the first hail I've seen in two years. Now it's stopped raining, but the chickens that my neighbours have been raising are running around outside clucking like mad. Seems vaguely apocalyptic.

It also happens to be near the 30th anniversary of the huge Tangshan earthquake that killed upwards of 200,000 people (we had a small quake a few weeks ago, around 5.1 on the Richter scale). I was surprised and amused to learn that the Tangshan earthquake is actually at the centre of a few crackpot conspiracy theories.

Where do people get this stuff? My favourite new one is that the weather in Alaska is actually being controlled by the Yakuza and the Japanese doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo, using electromagnetic weapons they got from the KGB. Anyone else have favourite conspiracy theories?

Most of the popular ones I've heard would send this thread over to the P & R forum.

Oooh, good point. Still, I'm interested in the theories. Maybe one day I'll work up the courage to check out P&R myself

My favorite conspiracy theory is that the Government created the Internet to get us to post what we think the conspiracies are, so they can keep one step ahead of us in their conspiracies.

Nikola Tesla, the father of A/C and the one we can thank for all of this wonderful electricity we use every second of our lives, had many other inventions and hundreds of patents. He even claimed he created a weapon which was like a "death ray" and, using the Earth's magnetic field, could destroy anything on Earth, including the entire planet. When he died, the US government seized all of his notes under "national security." Supposedly the weather and earthquakes can and are being controlled by one of Tesla's electromagnetic inventions.

According to the Book Of Revelation in my Bible (the Sideshow Bob version), the clucking of the chickens happens early in the apocalyptic process, so we're good for a while!

Conspiracy: KFC (or insert other popular urban food chain that has some kind of racial stereotype around it) engineers their food to make a certain race of people sterile.

Here's one of my own: Vegetarian meat....really, what the hell is this? Is this for people that don't want to eat meat for an animal rights reason, or what? If you miss meat, why not eat meat instead of faking it? Maybe i just don't see the bigger picture, but to me I think it's the vegetarians trying to fool us meat eters into eating what they want us to eat.

....they are not winning....vegetarian meat does NOT taste like the meat it's trying to be.

Ha ha, great thread, Spike.

Favorite conspiracy theory? This one floated around college campuses in the 70's. I got it from my older brother, who got it from a Physics professor.

Goodyear Tires Conspiracy:According to this theory, in the 1930's a scientist came up with an artificial rubber compound that was so durable, it lasted many of our lifespans. It would make some things obselete, such as replacing tires (for your bike for instance!) or wearing down the soles of your shoes. It would also put the rubber companies out of business, while in the process making the inventor a very rich and powerful man. He perfected his formula after many years, and when he was satisfied with the results, took his creation to the U.S. Patent office. It was quickly approved, and the man was, to say the least, elated. He was sure to change the world, and probably win the Nobel Prize to boot.

Unfortunately, when his peers went to his lab to congratulate him, everything was gone. They went to his house, and everything was missing, like no one ever lived there. So they checked the last place he was seen, the patent office. No record existed of his ever stepping foot in the building.

Theorists claim that the U.S. govt., prompted by a powerful Goodyear lobby, stole the technology and killed the man, keeping rubber prices soaring in a disposable culture of waste.

What do you think?

No, sorry -- and anyway from my apartment, the pictures wouldn't have been that exciting. It would have just looked kinda dark.

So what happened to all these "peers"? Were they killed, threatened, given hush money?

P & R II might be about right. China is a Communist State and so is Cuba. Now, Fidel has gone into temporary (?) medical retirement. That might be enough to cause those signs of the end times. One might hope.

That's supposedly the stuff that the Yakuza is using. I'm not sure why they want to control the weather, but it has something to do with Alaskan oil pipelines. As if that makes any more sense....

This would make a great modern Dr. Strangelove type farce of a movie/book.

I am inspired. I will share the royalties with the OP if he lets me use the title.

China's government is communist in name only, but that's another point for P&R. Anyway, the roosters are crowing again!
