My Paycheck Bounced

[*****fest]
And my boss is all pissy that I did not show up for work today. Soon as I see green cash, he'll see productivity. It's only a part time gig for a local wedding photog (I do his photoshop work), but still, I'm kinda hand to mouth this month.
It's not that I want to hang around the net all day, but it's all I can afford right now.
And I can't find a job I want on Craig's List--Middle of Nowhere. Damn, I hate having to look for work.

wow, that sucks! bouncing a paycheck and then getting pissed you don't want to work more? the nerve! i live check to check, and i know something like that would have serious consequences (ie. starvation or eviction), i hope you get that cash soon!

and seriously, find a new job because chances are if it happens once, it will happen again

'Preciate the sympathy Zinn,
Current boss blows at CS (geek speak for Photoshop), so he needs me, and it's why he's pissy, bottlenecked himself. But it's hard currency in advance or I don't play.

I've refused to work when I didn't get my check in time, but I can't say I've ever had a paycheck bounce. That really sucks.

I'm not sure where you live, but it seems like the economy sucks all over. I know way too many people who are looking for work in Michigan, myself included. Good luck finding a better job.

Thanks Michinganer,
My location under my Avatar is for real.
Between, Georgia Population as of 2000 census=184 (wikipedia has that stat wrong). But we've probably doubled since then, still we could hold a town meeting in a Denny's, as if we had one, or a police dpt, or a school. We do have a stop sign, and a quickie mart.
The economy here is.....slim, and I really don't want to have to commute to Atlanta again. But I've become addicted to certain creature comforts; satellite tv, ac, not being rousted by the sherif because of foreclosure, eating--you know, the simple things

My take is I expect the check (bank instrument only) within 7 days after any paycheck related BS, or I contact an attorney.

There is a contract between employee/employer to work and be paid for said work, so I will pursue any failure to fill their end to the furthest extent of the law.

Contact your state workforce commission. They will definitely have some advice for you, and probably help you make an official complaint about the employer. If it gets serious, they can freeze his bank account in the proccess.

If you are contract labor, try small claims court. In my area it only costs about $15 to submit a claim.

I did. Delivers cash to my door, or I leave him stuck with his work load. My rate has gone up for any future work as well.
Not the litigious type, so either I get paid or I don't, won't push it any farther that that.

ugh. that's a tough spot. I used to work for this fellow who was as shady as a 100 year old oak tree. On payday, my coworkers and I would race across the street to the bank it was drawn on, each hoping to be first in line to the teller window.

Why don't you start checking Craigslist for the larger metro areas like NYC, DC, LA, Chicago... I'm sure you can find some freelance p'shop work you can do remotely. It could get you through the tough time or could turn into a legit gig for the future.

Best of luck to you whatever you do.

That suxors......

I can't say I've ever had that problem, but I do remember some friends in high school who worked for McDonalds. They had some "issues" and they were about 6 weeks back on pay. They were still royal pains about making sure they were there and did their job, but come on.....after a few paychecks, I'd be gone like the wind.

Run the check through the bank again.
If it bounces a second time, take out an ad wherever he advertises and put nothing in it but a copy of the bounced check. With your image manipulation skills, you can make the rubber stamp imprints and the business name good and clear.

If he doesn't want to see it there again, name your cash price for him to redeem his rubber check.

If that fails there's always extortion.

It really depends on if your boss is sincerely in the hole or not. If he's sincere, give the guy a break, if he's just withholding, then no pay no work.

Thats something I never have a problem with at work. My boss is pretty much a curmudgeon, definitely a yankee, but a straight shooter.
