WOrking on a national holiday = time and a half?

Isn't that how it works?
I think my boss is wanting me to work on labor day, as he will be. I hate to sound like a greedy ahole but, I always thought working on a nationally recognized holiday earned you extra per hour. Am I correct?

I used to pay different penalties depending on awards or work place agreements.
The most common was:
Weekdays: Normal time + time and a half = double time and a half.
Weekends: Double time and a half.

Thank your boss for giving you a job!

And to answer your question:

Part-time/Temp - Never got time and a half.
Full-time - No time and a half, but we did get paid for holidays on top of the time we worked. That ended up sucking, sometimes, because that would cancel out overtime.
Salary - I am their slave. They ring a bell, I come, bowing.

I believe that time and a half is not mandatory for holidays.

The Stage Hand Union in Athens has the best overtime I've ever heard of. Any time you are over 8 hours in a day, 1.5. After midnight 1.5. No meal brake 1.5. Sunday 1.5. Over 8 hours for the day, no meal breaks, after midnight, on a Sunday 6x pay.
Me, I'm self employed, what is this extra pay you speak of?

You need to erase that conservative BS from your mind, it's your time, for which you should be paid accordingly. All these corporatist Republicans and Libertarians have poisoned the well of popular belief to tell you only the CEO can say how much your time is worth, holidays or otherwise. Don't listen to them, they like to act as if the Robber Baron era of our history never happened. Demand time and a half, if you don't get it, you're only 16, right? Quit and find someone who does. Just because it's a Free Market, don't be someone's b1tch.

I remember working at Sears and they would flip shjt if you worked over 40 hours in a week. Needless to say, I never got along with the management there.

If you have a contract use it. If not come up with something important to do quickly. Use something clever like a big family reunion or a marriage in your GF's family and do not tell him you are planning to ride your bicycle in the Tour of Hog Heaven.

It depends on the company policy & state employment law.

At my current job (and one of my previous jobs), We get time & a half, plus holiday pay for working on a holiday. That works out to double-time and a half. At another job I had, if we worked on a holiday, we got regular time plus holiday pay, so it was double-time.

Isn't there a federal-law that defines holiday pay?

I can't believe it took this long to get the correct answer posted. Check your state's web site.

Not that I am aware of. The main federal law is the one that deals with minimum wage, and there are so many loop holes in there it is basically worthless.

I am 17 . It turns out, he has decided not to work on monday (which means I am not working either). Instead, I worked today.
I find it difficult to find a balance between being a good worker, and taking care of my own self. I remember a month ago I posted here about concerns of riding to work in 100+ degree weather, and somebody posted 'if one of my guys showed such determination, I would have let him go at the first chance'. I never thought my concerns or actions are work were extraordinary, in the negative direction.

Time and a half for overtime. Double time for working on a holiday. But only if you're protected by a union contract, otherwise you're SOL.

So if you are not protected by a union contract, you won't get 1.5x for working overtime? Sheesh

In the words of the Clint Eastwood character in Pale Rider (I paraphrase): "A man
alone is an easy target. Stick together. No matter what happens, remember that."
The only rights you have are the rights you collectively assert. When it comes down
to it, the government agencies are now in the hands of pro-business ideologues. You
won't get relief there.

For the seven holidays recognized by my company (Thansgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, July 4th, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and President's Day), I get double time if I work, and straight time for the day (8 hours) if I don't. I love holidays...

I get x3 for holidays or x2 with an additional day off, my choice. If you're 16 and working part-time you are pretty much screwed unless state law dictates otherwise. If you have a union check with them, but in my experience with modern unions a kid your age won't get much satisfaction.
