So I made a trip to New Hampshire to visit my friend blondualthlongrl today.
Except for traffic around Worcester, MA the ride up was pretty easy. The town she lives in along the coast is very scenic. I must say a few things before I start the ride report:
1. BDG is even better looking in person than in her photos. And a really nice person.
2. She is super fit and you’d think she’s ten years younger than her actual age.
3. She can ride! Which is the best part!
So we agree to head out for a 25 mile-ish ride on a warm, sunny, but very windy day. BDG takes lead out of the parking lot and within like 200 feet she’s cranking along at like 21 mph! I’m thinking…dam…I need about 4 miles to warm up before I start cranking out the watts! I follow her for a couple miles and the pace evens out to a comfortable 18.5 and we start chatting. The shoreline area where she lives is breath-taking, with fresh salt air, ocean views, and waves breaking all along the shore. I jump in front and pretty soon we are doing a comfortable 21mph. I turn and ask “I’m I going fast enough for you?” She says “No..you’re actually going a little too slow.” With a smirk on her face. So I bump it up to 23mph and we stay there along most of the shore. One mansion is just amazing, with a pool area that is to die for. We stopped at two state parks/recreation areas to enjoy the amazing views and soak in a little morning sunshine. Along the ride we crossed two bridges (one wooden planked and one metal grated) they were interesting to get across to say the least. We slowed down and cruised in a few sections admiring the wildlife etc. In the mid section of the ride, BDG took a few good turns at the front pulling, but I think the chance to sit in and draft off of me was too tempting, because we cranked out 22+ mph most of the way back with me in the lead. Despite the wind, it wasnt much effort to keep a 22mph pace. We did stop one last time to take a few pictures in front of the previously mentioned mansion & pool (equipped with pool-hand) before arriving back in the parking lot. The ride was fairly flat, but had some nice sections with rollers that made you put in some real effort to keep the speed consistent.
Our ride ended up being 28 miles with an average speed of 17.9mph. It was a lot of fun and I’m glad we finally got to ride together! We grabbed a quick bit to eat and then headed to the sea wall to chat and watched some local surfers enjoying the early fall waves before I headed home. I’m glad I made the trip. It was a great day for riding and hanging out with Blondie.
