Need help choosing an mp3 player.

Okay, I'm out of the loop so I need some help. I guess my main question is what makes the iPod better than all the rest? The only thing I am going to use it for is music that I get off of my cd's. I have dial up so downloading songs really isn't an option. Hopefully I can get high speed in the next couple of years and that will change, however until it is available I'm stuck with dial up.

Anyway, my main requirement is ease of use. If I do get the iPod it will be the 1 GB nano. I don't have any need for any more storage than it has.

I don't like the little iPods. I believe they will only play music in alphabetical order (at least that's what I saw when I was looking). I ended up with one made by SanDisk.

What makes iPod better? Advertising hype.

A creative marketing scheme with a lot of money to back it up.

You can get a Creative Labs Zen 1GB player for $30 less (or a 2GB for the same price as the iPod). Plus you don't have to deal with Apple trying to sell you iTunes.

And if you want to take a gamble on Wal-Mart electronics, they have a 1GB player for $50.

Ritsehad, incorrect.

You can make your own play lists. The music you put on the ipod is in alphabetical order according to band. Easy, simple, yet atrractive and organized layout. They've made the new players even smaller and have the capacity to hold more.

I don't have one, but my 2 bros do, and everyone under the son does too.

I stand corrected Pheard.

I have a 512Mb BUSlink with a flash drive rather than a hard drive like the iPods have. It holds enough music to keep me entertained for a few hours, and I didn't have to spend a buttload of money on it.

Can you even believe they have an 80gb ipod now?

I mean look at these things. They aesthetically wise are the best looking mp3 player out there.

The batteries now have 20 hours of battery life.

Check out the apple store comparison amongst the ipods.

- want 50-hour battery life? replaceable AA battery? cross-platform (any operating system) compatibility? FM radio? voice recorder? small size? .ogg file player? ease of use?

- i recommend this 1GB model or this 2GB model

- excellent players!

- too bad you can't wait, 'cause this christmas mp3 players will be *the* stocking stuffer, and since Sandisk is dumping its flash chip gizmos on the market, expect low, low, and lower prices!

iTunes is a free download and is the computer interface to the iPod. You don't have to buy anything else from Apple to use it. They don't force you to buy from the site. Just rip your CD's like normal. The Shuffle is tiny and randomly plays songs. Good for some. The Nano is a little bigger and there's playlists and albums. Nice. It doesn't play alphabetically, however. That would be weird.

The biggger iPod's will play video. Overkill in my book. Battery killer.

That said. I don't use mp3 players. But I've done some research and like the iPod's and would get one if I needed to have music on the go. The new release of the Nano will play for like twenty hours I think.

- note that i edited the link for the 1GB model - it now points to the iAudio G3, *not* the G2... the G3 does USB 2.0...

- FWIW, our household owns the original ipod, ipod mini, 1GB iAudio G3, and the Sandisk m230 (512MB player)... the wife unit bought me the original ipod for an xmas present, but i didn't see it for two years as she used it all the time... i bought her the mini for an anniversary present two years ago and she uses it in her office... i bought the G3 for myself, but she took it to Europe on a trip and now i'll never get it back, as she says she wants it for business travel...

- so i'm stuck with the Sandisk for my bike rides - the original ipod is a pig player, and is too heavy for my tastes...

- the G3 is an *excellent* player and will play DRM'd music/audiobooks...

- i do NOT recommend purchasing DRM'd music or audio...

- if you want free audiobooks, go to Librivox's site for free audiobooks.

Nope, don't plan on doing any 50 hour rides.

I would prefer a rechargable internal battery but can live with a AA or AAA.

Needs windows compatible.

FM radio doesn't really interest me.

I do want reasonably small but want to be able to easily navigate also. Seems like most really small players are harder to use.

Ease of use is the priority.

One other question. Does the iPod nano come with any type charger or do you have to buy it seperately?

The biggest plus to the ipod is it's way smaller than other mp3 players. That jet audio looks like the size of an audio tape player.

Lowcel, your going to be using this while you train right?

The nano is really small.

My suggestion lowcel- get the nano+ and arm band

and it does come with a charger. The new ipod nano battery has 24 hour life before needing recharge.

Yes, however when on the road only one ear piece will be used. Whatever I buy has to be light enough that it doesn't annoy me too much being in my jersey pocket. Sweat resistant would be a bonus as well.

I've held a nano before. It's small and you won't even feel it. The kit comes with:

* • iPod nano
* • Earphones
* • USB 2.0 cable
* • Dock adapter
* • Quick Start guide

For easyness the armband would definitely be the way to go.

If you think it'd be too small go over to bestbuy and take a look at it before purchasing to make sure you can read the screen.

Forgive my ignorance, does that mean it comes with a charger or doesn't?

One of my friends was looking for an armband for his Nano in Walmart. The cheapest one was $30 for a simple velcro armband! The accessories are where you really lose money.

I believe the dock adaptor is the charger, unless they've changed things since we bought our ipods.

Crap... I'm not even sure now if it comes with the charger. Lowcel, you're going to want to go to bestbuy or whatever large electronic store you have around there and just take a look and ask these questions.

Yeah, might head to Circuit City when I get off work. Depends on my new fork comes in or not. If so I'll be going by the shop and installing it then going home and trying to set it up. Oh, then getting on the trainer and doing spin ups.

It's bad, I don't mind spending the money for the iPod but something in me just won't let me do it if I have to spend another $35 on a charger in order to be able to use it.

See I believe it comes with a way for charging. But there are extra charging accessories such as the

dock
and this portable charger

Really if the thing that's going to help you decide or not is if it comes with a charger. Call circuit city and see if it comes with the ipod.

Have you ever tried getting decent customer service at a Circuit City that doesn't pay commission? You will have about the same chance of seeing a Unicorn setting in the gold at the end of a rainbow.

I wouldn't know, I hate circuit city. Bestbuy usually has the best prices on everything.

You could always call the apple ipod place( I'm sure there is a service number) and ask if the ipod comes with a way of charging.
