Apparently this treatment was discovered during the US Civil War. Nurses discovered that soldiers who had been laying around a while picked up maggots in their wounds had the dead flesh eaten away cleanly, leaving living tissue alone. Ever see leeches used to clear out a bad bruise?

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I had maggot therapy when I had nonhealing wounds on my legs to clean up the necrotic tissue. It felt weird, believe me, with the maggots crawling around inside the bandage, but it probably saved my leg!

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth...but if I were going to lose the leg, I'd do it in a heartbeat, too.

Here is a link to see what exactly I was talking about. These aren't my legs, but mine looked like these legs!

Thanks for the photos, that's awesome! I was hoping to see some footage of maggots in action though... A time-lapse sequence like they have on the Discovery channel where the maggots are in fast-forward moving over the mouse as it slowly disappears...

I didn't want to hotlink the images though, as it may have truly grossed out some folk!

Why you say that? I think it's a perfectly valid procedure and has been presented in numerous sources (warning, photos):

National Geographic - Medical Maggots Treat As They Eat - "You must have a happy, hungry maggot or you will get no results"
U.S. Army Survival Manual - Basic Survival Medicine: Wounds
Biosurgical Research Unit - Introduction to Maggot Therapy
A case history describing the use of sterile larvae (maggots) in a malignant wound.

Maggot juice. Is that like a worm in the bottom of a bottle of tequila?

You could brew your own.
