I did not have sexual relations with that woman. Technically, we aren't even related, even though I am from Arkansas. - Bill Clinton

Common misconception, I have it on good authority from both native speakers and German Master's Degree holders that the "donut" thing is not the case...and that the rousing applause after he said it indicated the people knew what he was talking about.

My quote:

"In actual fact the pacifistic-humane idea is perfectly all right perhaps when the highest type of man has previously conquered and subjected the world to an extent that makes him the sole ruler of this earth… Therefore, first struggle and then perhaps pacifism."
- Adolf Hitler

Removing the portion in italics...

Well, there's a difference between the use of the general infinitive "the" in Engrish vs. the European languages. We say, "do you want water?" to mean water in-general. In European languages, you would say, "do you want the water?" to mean in-general.

Similary, a difference exists with the specific infinitive "a" as well. In Engrish, we say specifically, "do you want a Coke?", whereas the Europeans would say, "do you want Coke?" as they point to it in referring to a specific can of soda.

Additional confusion in this case is also that "Beliner" is also the proper-name of a donut brand.

BTW - I also have it from first-hand eye-witnesses at the event that there were plenty of people that were confused as well... then applauded seconds later. The context of the communications comes through even though the actual content may be scrambled, similar to how furriners can be understood here even though they may leave out the occasional "the" or "a".
