Do you ever feel like its just a glorified position for babysitting??? I mean honestly why do I need to tell you to stop shouting at someone from your desk??

I will love you forever if you come over here and do that. And while you're at it, smack around the people who call the person in the next office over via speakerphone...

I'm considering firing all my subordinates and replacing them with clones of myself.

NEVER. It gets tiresome having to explain every third thing to my managers.

Im management.. yes i feel like I repeat everything at least 10 times to everyone, I try and keep my cool.. but sometimes I really feel like it's a day care.
the worst thing about it is that Im management of about 6 men and management of about 20 woman, the woman are way harder to handle.
I could deal with men only and Id be happy. I say it like it is, they say it like it is. period, Done.

Management translates to Babysitting in Swahili.

I still do a little supervising but don't really like it. Your right about babysitting and having to listen to all their troubles (even if you don't care).

I used to be in charge of a group of around 25 people and I had three managers as direct reports under me. When I first took the position, I believed it to be a good thing as I thought it would allow me to organise the efforts to implement my "grand design". It turned out that people management skills (which I highly lacked) were much more important than technical design/architecture skills. Still. I am not bitter about the experience. I think I learned a lot from it and would not necessarily shy away from management if offerred the opportunity again. I would however do things differently as a result of what I've learned.

Babysitting is exactly right. Our contract very clearly states exact job descriptions, job assignments and rates of pay. So I get really sick of hearing:

Why do I have to do _____?
Why doesn't he/she have to do _____?
Why does he/she do _____?
Why can't I do _____?
He/she's not doing _____.
He/she should have to do _____?
Are we getting a raise soon?
Are we getting bonuses?

Thanks for letting me vent, I needed that.

I managed(?) a Union print shop at one of the bigger Universities in Pa.
I couldnt take it after only 6 months. It did however quantify two previously
unsubstantiated hypothosis I pondered, those being, A: I hate people, and
B:, I hate Unions.
Now, I have resigned myself to realizing good leaders need good followers.
I am completely happy in my roll of follower

well it is a proven fact that us woman are more emotional then men and sadly those emotions affect your work place as well.
Not all woman cant put emotions aside and be professional but it's my experinece in my work place that we all suffer from these woman who you have to tip toe around or the ones who think it's OK to talk about thier private life. It isnt and I have made a huge poster that says "leave your worries at home, and at no point when you confine me with your problems do they become MY problems"
and so far it works.
With a men, you can walk up to him and adress an issue, with a woman ( in MY work place) you have to be careful which way you say one thing so that they dont take it personnal, wont cry, wont talk smack , wont get catty...ect ect ect, gets very old.
My motto is that I talk to everyone the same way, you got hormones in the way? too bad and if unhappy, go home I can find someone who wont let the hormones get in the way of work.
If I let them run the show it wouldnt be pretty, pots and pans would be flying around every night.
It takes a woman to know one and trust me, I dont wish 20 of me on anyone

What's the deal? Is it the woman vs. woman thing? Is it because the superior is a woman? I haven't had any difficulties or differences in managing women vs. men. My primary problem has been a matter of training and competence. Both men & women can be equally incompetent! Good help is hard to find...

EDIT: you beat me with your response...

Sometimes being a manager doesn't necessarily have anything to do with leading. I used to think that the manager was all about being the leader but I did find out that management more often than not meant performing housekeeping and janitorial services.

the extra $8,000-10,000 a year i could make getting a management job here just isn't worth it. i don't want to be responsible in any way for anyone's job performance.

the only way i would manage employees was if i owned the place.
