Internet guru's.

How do I find out iof a site is cancelled or something?

I spent a looonnnnggg time on a forum called ricecop, but now it's down, has been for the last few days. All I get is:

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.ricecopforums.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Everybody else I talk to on the forum cant get on either. Is there a way one of you could figure out if the domain has been cancelled or something?

Thank you.

Nevermind, after like 5 days of it being down, it's back up.

It's "gurus" without an apostophe!

Unless you were talking about something owned by an internet guru.

They probably had a bunch of php code corruption on their servers or they may have been migrating to another server!

They had problems updating Apache and it would not reload. It took several days to get another hard drive and install the NOS on it.

No problem, glad to be of help. Yes, us real gurus fix things before we even know they are broke!

Although the problem's resolved, there are a few things you can do in the future to troubleshoot connectivity issues to a specific site.
  1. Check with pings and/or traceroutes to the machine. If DNS is messed up then use the IP address. Traceroutes should tell you if there's a routing problem.
    Code:
    % traceroute www.ricecopforums.com
traceroute to ricecopforums.com (69.93.86.131), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets
    [HOPS OMITTED]

  2. Check with the whois database to see if the domain has been withdrawn/locked/expired/whatever. If they're truly gone then the registrar will probably have removed their entry or flagged it as locked.
    Code:
    % whois ricecopforums.com
The data contained in GoDaddy.com, Inc.'s WhoIs database,
while believed by the company to be reliable, is provided "as is"
with no guarantee or warranties regarding its accuracy. This
information is provided for the sole purpose of assisting you
in obtaining information about domain name registration records.
Any use of this data for any other purpose is expressly forbidden without the prior written
permission of GoDaddy.com, Inc. By submitting an inquiry,
you agree to these terms of usage and limitations of warranty. In particular,
you agree not to use this data to allow, enable, or otherwise make possible,
dissemination or collection of this data, in part or in its entirety, for any
purpose, such as the transmission of unsolicited advertising and
and solicitations of any kind, including spam. You further agree
not to use this data to enable high volume, automated or robotic electronic
processes designed to collect or compile this data for any purpose,
including mining this data for your own personal or commercial purposes.

Please note: the registrant of the domain name is specified
in the "registrant" field. In most cases, GoDaddy.com, Inc.
is not the registrant of domain names listed in this database.

    Registrant:

    Code:

  4. And finally, just to rule out a broken browser, you might even want to check using raw HTTP.

You do realize that most folks' eyes glazed over and they started checking the news sites at about this point in your post, don't you? Related to another thread...that is something I learned when babysitting executives and their minions in the corporate ivory tower...if you can't say it in one simple sentence, with no techie jargon, preferably with pretty pictures and graphs, their minds go to the mush state.

Being on the consulting side of the business, I install secret switches at all of my clients with two positions: working and broken. The "working" position ensures that I look impressive when onsite, and the "broken" position ensures that they will ask me to come back in the future.

And now we see why Khuon didn't work out so well as a manager. Too much attention to detail

  4. And finally, just to rule out a broken browser, you might even want to check using raw HTTP.
    Code:
    % telnet www.ricecopforums.com 80

    Connected to ricecopforums.com.

All of the above should tell you if the machine and network connectivity is good. If there are still problems then it's all content-related.
