USS Oriskany, The Sinking of an Aircraft Carrier

If anyone has a copy of the program (mentioned in the title above) that aired on the Discovery channel recently I would be forever indebted if I could obtain a copy!!!! Why? My dad served on the ship and I think that'd be a great gift. Discovery customer service tells me that they doubt it will be available on DVD

Why did they care how it sank? They made a big deal about it not turning over.

From what I understand Discovery devoted an hour to it and that's what I was hoping to get a copy of.

Thanks for the effort

Have you checked out Discovery's website?? Maybe you can obtain a video directly from them. I know you can do this with A&E.

I spoke to customer service via telephone. I was told less than 5% of their programming makes it to DVD and this program likely would not. I'll cross my fingers though. How's Snowy these days?

Bummer, I had that Tivo'ed but just erased it. Great show!
I wish they would have done the same kind of program when they sunk the America but I guess they did some secret stuff to see how the ship would sink.

My dad was on the Philippine Sea (CV-47). Yet another Essex class carrier.

Any idea about the calculus that made skuttling her more valuable than recovering the iron?

Anyway, beautiful wasn't she. . .even in dying.

With the older ships there's usually a lot of abestos and other contaminents that are present. It's very costly to strip it off so the cost of recycling far outweighs the benefits. By sinking the ship it's much cheaper, creates reefs to boost fishing and diving expeditions.

They did it with a lot of the old subway cars in NYC. They couldn't even pay other countries to take them for either the metal or to be used as cars. They cleaned out all the oil and grease and dumped them off of the Carolinas and NJ to create artifical reefs.

TIVO would be your best bet - if you know it's on maybe someone can record it for you!

...submarines, on the other hand, are a different story. They are generally completely scrapped and recycled.

I saw this on Discovery channel or at least most of it, but alas, I don't have a tivo or DVR. It was an interesting program. They basically cleared the bridge that they had to go under by inches or so and then a tow line snapped and the AC was a huge floating piece of scrap steel for awhile til they realized it!
