The "Real" Guardians

Hey guys and gals - lots and lots of hard core cyclist in the Coast Guard. Since I started cycling two months ago I’ve lost 26 lbs and dropped my blood pressure from 135/90 to 120/70. Cycling gave me (and my family) my life back.

I'm still in the Coast Guard - 21 years. I’ve seen the movie "The Guardian" twice and love the fact that WE finally get some recognition and our first movie (which was well done).

Anyway, many of you youngsters are looking for a challenge in life. Think you got what it takes? Follow the following links and watch some movies WE have put together ourselves - meaning homer movies. These show the Coast Guard at work from actual Guardians personal videos, pictures, and pirated clips and they are awesome.

If you want a job that NO-ONE else can do 'cause their hunkered down behind sandbags and plywood glued to the weather channel, come ride with us...

In my 21 years, I’ve put away felon drug smugglers in the Atlanta Penitentiary, seen 30 plus foot seas MANY times, was underway off Cape Henry during the perfect storm (that sucked), was deployed for Katrina, and have either called hundreds of elated spouses and children to tell them of our rescue of their loved ones, or made next of kin notifications with my Captain for those we have lost. But the thing I’m most proud of is the people I work with every day.

And since I'm a retiring Chief - like the character Kevin Costner played - I feel the same way... the hardest part of hanging on...

is letting go...

Hang on (if you think you can…), it's 'sportin weather,

Just to clarify – this post was to generate interest in the Coast Guard. If you know any “20 something’s looking for a job… tell ‘em 1-800-GET-USCG.

Thanks for all the accolades – instead of giving those to me, go up and thank every service member you see in the future. All services. You’d be surprised how much it means to them.

Because some of us Foo Folk are retired military and it was cool video and foo is the most appropriate place for the video. We don't object to anything you post here, please extend the same courtesy.

If the OP was directed towards retirees, that would be one thing; he wasn't doing that, he was actively recruiting. And I wasn't being rude, I was merely asking a question.

Sorry if you thought I was saying you were being rude....not the case! I was trying to refute being touchy is all!

uhhh... no, aviator!

long running "rivalry" between surface warfare officers and aviators. At some point in the past, aviators started wearing brown shoes instead of black. Now it's become one of those friendly internal rivalries. So, since I fly, I'm a "brownshoe".

My bad, I always confuse the black shoes and the brown shoes...I just ain't nautical I guess, but what do you expect from a sea-going bellhop?

In the Corps the distinction is a bit more clear - grunt vs winger...and I was both. Started as a grunt, then got smart and swung with the wing.

Negative, I am not a recruiter. I just think most of the younger hard core cyclist are good candidates to take my place when I retire 01 Feb '07.

Again, the Coast Guard has many, many hard core cyclist (as I am sure all the other services have also).

Well, at least you're not a "target". As they say, there are two types of ships, submarines and targets!

Sorry Chief, but when you mention hard core, only one Corps fits the bill.

Thanks Chief for the post, but more importantly for the service to the country! My father in law was CG, had great stories of weather patrol in the Aluetians, looking for Russian "cold fronts". Had to go out with hammers and beat the ice off the boat.

My favorite was the one where they were using boat hooks as fishing poles while on patrol when he was stationed in Hawaii. Big fish would hit and the boat hook would snap. Some officer caught on to what was going on, and one day a crate of fishing gear shows up at the dock with a note that to stop breaking boat hooks.

Enjoy your retirement and keep riding.
