You're being tailgaited on the highway...

What is your typical reaction? Do you take action against the person? Put car in neutral and step on the gas? Slow way down?

Can you tell I'm in a bad mood tonight? Maybe I should go practice chopping things up with my ninja swords to blow off some steam. . .

Move over and let the guy past. He may have some reason to go fast that I know nothing of. I tend to stay out of the left lane unless I am moving fast. Move back right as soon as is practable. And if he is just a psycho, I would rather not be around him anyway. I have a life I want to live.

If I'm in the left lane, I move over. If I'm in one of the center lanes I just slow way down untill they get pissed go around me. A few times I've hit the breaks when I've really had it.

If I'm in the left lane, I'm already passing someone. I'll move over when I've passed that person or group and let them pass. If I'm in the right lane, they can pass me or slow down. I'm more than happy to demonstrate how to slow down in front of them.

I remember a friend in high school who bought a cigarette lighter powered SUPER BRIGHT spotlight. He would shine it through the back window into the eyes of tailgaters.

couple of flashes of the brake lights and if that doesn't get the message across, a light tap on the brakes to slow down. If all else fails, what Sabre said....

If you're already in the right lane, or there's only one lane going in each direction, and you going the speed limit, screw 'em, tap the brake so the lights go on, if that don't do, slow down 5mph to piss em off enough so they (legally or illegally) pass you.

Where I drive there is enough open space so that you don't really have to worry about heavy traffic, so if I get tailgated I take it as a challenge that the person wants to race. I used to get worked up over it and try to steer them into a car up in front of me and stuff like that, but now that I've been a licenced driver for a few years it doesn't bother me so much.

Ignore 'em. They always pass, and in the year or so I've driven 55 on CA freeways, I've only had a couple get irritated, and they just speed off. As long as you're in the right lane and driving around the limit, they don't seem to care much about it.

Ignore it. That's what I do. Just drive like you would normally drive. Let them waste their energy, not you.

I had a weird thing happen to me once. I was driving along and the car in front of me decided to play games with me. He was going slow, then speeding up, then slamming on his brakes, weaving all over the road, etc. We came to a 4-way stop and he kind of stopped there like he was waiting to see which way I was going. I wanted to go right, so I turned my left turn signal on. Sure enough, as soon as I did that he turned left and I was on my way.

Some people have way too much free time.

If she is really mad, she follows them home and waits until dinner time and then makes their peas touch their potatos.

I have a large bumpersticker, and it reads "If you can read this, warning, the driver chews tobacco and spits out the window!"

Now, I don't chew, but the bumpersticker sure seems to work........very few people tailgate me for more than a second!

If I'm in the fast lane and going over the speed limit I stay. If not I move over....... then smile at them.

1. If you're in the left lane and not passing and someone is tailgaiting you, then you deserve it. Speed up, finish your pass then SLOW down again. (Nothing more annoying then a left lane blocker who then speeds up so all the people that were stuck behind him can't get by.)

2. If you aren't blocking the left lane then who cares. That's their problem.

I know a couple of people who just drive that way. They're not bad people, actually quite nice. They just were never taught to drive correctly and have never learned, so they just tend to drive up people's butts.

When I'm with them, I try to remind them but old habits die hard. On the other hand, the morons who flip out because their personal space is being invaded end up looking like silly jackasses.

If you really think the person is endangering you, speed up and slow down a few times gradually to send a subtle hint. Don't jam your brakes and do other insane things like that.

Just my opinion.

If I am in the fast lane, I get over. If I am in the slow lane and the other is open I go the speed limit, then pretend to be arguing on the phone. This rarely happens too me.
