    Wreaths Across America

This story and video have deeply moved me. Its the story of a small Maine company, the Worcester Wreath Company, that places Christmas wreaths on 5000 graves at Arlington National Cemetary each year. This year they also provided wreaths for veteran’s graves in all 50 states.

I read about this recently. I learned today that they also did wreaths at the National Cemetary here in RI. Had I known early enough, I would have taken my command out there to participate. Unfortunately, I'll be gone by next year's event, but I'm going to pass it on to my relief and my other leadership that will still be here.

Here's another great group that I learned about this year, in a sad way. The Patriot Guard Riders. They're a motorcycle organization that attends every veteran's funeral. I attended one this summer for a local Marine killed in Iraq and was astounded by the number of bikes lining the entry way into the National Cemetary. What they do, besides paying their respects is keep the sound of any protesters from reaching the service site (can you imagine? Protesters interrupting a family's greiving as they bury their loved one?!?) by revving their engines to drown out the protesters.. The protesters are not allowed onto the grounds of the National Cemetery during services. You can read about their group here, just as much of a tribute, in their own way, as Mr. Worcester's.
