GPS is amazing!

I have to admit it. Ive found my new hobby and obsession. I got my Garmin Vista Cx today and even though I havent figured it out completely yet, I am amazed at how fun it is to see what youve done in just about any stat you can think of. The first and only thing Ive done so far is calibrate the compass and walk the boundry on my 1 acre home place. I downloaded it to the computer and then overlapped it on Google Earth and found it was very accurate, fun and easy. Im going on my first bike ride with it in a few minutes. I cant wait! Gotta go.

I have a garmin watch, Ive had a lot of fun with it too!
I set it to train with someone at a certain pace , it tells me how many feet Im behind or ahead, it tells me to slow it down sometimes too!
It tells me by how far Ive lost or won and how fast I was going or how Ive improved or what i need to do to achive my goal. I agree with you, it is a fun toy to have!

with the google earth thing, did you have to subscribe to the google earth plus edition?

i have the vista cx too, and havent figured everything out yet either, but its a very cool gadget. i got a 1 gig card for mine and i put every street in canada on it

although, i gotta tell ya, these GPS systems are far cooler. although, they are about 100X the price. i use them at work quite regularly.

No I have the free version of Google Earth. All I did was plug my GPS Via USB into the computer and opened the program that came with it. I then hit Transfer From Devise and it pulled my path and waypoints out and saved them. With that window open of that said path, just look in the menu bars and find something thats says View With Google Earth. Click that and then it will open up Google Earth and place your path over the map. Are you a surveyor? Ive been doing it for a bit over 2 years now, but I dont use the big GPS as youve shown, although one of the other guys in the office does sometimes. I think ours cost around $13,000 I think??

Im an Engineer, ive been helping out the surveyors lately as work is slowing right down for the year.

We bought our GPS system used for $20,000. New i think they are about $30-40k, worth it considering it would take 5 times longer using a total station.

A guy who used to work in my office wrote a book several years ago about trail riding in southern Maine. He mapped out the routes using gps on his bike.

You guys are talking about the high-priced stuff, I guess. I have a Garmin Edge 305 and it is slicker than snake snot. It records all my rides, then I post them to MotionBased. I even make up routes and download them from coursecreator2 or something like that (Brad Culberson's site). It makes me want to go up hills so I can see how much climbing I did.

I have a garmin heart rate monitor that straps to my wrist like a watch that has GPS built in. Gives me accurate speed and direction when I'm jogging.

The barometric altimeter is a must .. I have an older magellan without one and I rode a 10 mile out and back including crossing a perfectly flat dam.. and on the way back it had fell 70 feet on my track... But it does make cool maps and I have been way lost on some 4x4 trails before and had to consult it in a pinch.. The dedicated compass feature would have been nice there as you have to be moving to tell which direction your going in.
