So long, and thanks for all the fish :(

The Baiji River Dolphin is no more.

http://www.baiji.org/

The news broke a few days ago, but I didn't really notice at the time. Then, today, I was given a translated article to edit, written shortly before the Baiji dolphin was declared "functionally extinct". It's so sad to read the article, written while there was still some hope for the species's survival. It's the first large mammal ever driven into extinction due to human destruction of habitats.

Anyway, just thought you should all know about this. Not sure what kind of reporting you've seen about this, but I find it very sad.

sorry... I should be more careful. I will change it to something less offensive to my rodent friends. I have removed my reference and leave an apology.

That's sad to hear. What's worse is it was preventable.

Being a dlophin lover, and having gone diving with both research and wild dolphins, this saddens me beyond words. We are destroying our planet at an alarming rate.

I'd agree to a certain extent. But as far as mass extinctions are concerned, mankind and its effect is chumpchange. Nevertheless, hopefully we'll find a way to neutralize ourselves before we screw things up even more.

If that makes you sad, don't go reading about what's been happening to the mountain and lowland gorillas in Africa.

One thing thats even more alarming are polar bears dying at an alarming rate due to the artic melting. MSN had a headline the other day about global warming that said something like "Debate over - The top of the world is melting..."

Although on a more positive note - their have been several sitings of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker in Arkansas. They thought this species was completely extinct for years. Maybe the river dolphins will reappear someday as well... But yeah, we've gotta take better care of our planet.
