A New Year...without Grandpa

This one's for you Snowy. Remember our PMs we had back when your grandfather died recently and I said mine was probably not far behind? That was a month or two ago when I spent the weekend with him while my grandmother was with my brother out of town visiting her sisters.

Well, it finally happened last night. Not sure what time, but Grandpa didn't quite make it to see 2007. I got a call from my brother about 1130pm that he was on his way home from a party he was at because Grandpa had died. Now I'm heading up (about 1 hour drive) to my Grandma's house to be with the family.

I won't say it was wholly unexpected...he's been feeling bad for quite some time. We all knew it probably wasn't too much longer. He did turn 80 this year, so its not like he didn't have a long life either. My grandparents (on mom's side) were a big part of our lives growing up. They were nearly as much a part of our lives as our parents were.

Goodbye Grandpa, I'll miss you.

Just wanted to say it...vent it, whatever. Thanks for any well wishes for the family....I'll be heading up now and probably not on here until tomorrow or late tonight likely.

Sorry for your loss KT. Losing a loved one on any day is hard, on a holiday has to be even worse.

Well.....a long day with the family, making arrangements at the funeral home and such. We are planning a memorial on Thursday, I'm given the task of scanning a photo of G-Pa and making one of those memorial type pictures (No sweat, I've done a few before).

Thanks for all the kind wishes everybody.

The holiday itself isn't a big deal to me....but what occurred to me this morning after I posted is that this is my dad and his new wife's (after my mom died 3 years ago) anniversary. So the father of my dad's 1st wife died on the 1st anniversary that he married his 2nd wife. That's gotta be weird.

Thanks Russian.....I think we are all more relieved than anything. He's been hurting for a while...it's nice to have it over with and him out of pain. Plus he had such a hard time with everything, my G-Ma was working to the bone just to take care of him. It will be nice for her to have a break even though its at the price of an empty house.

Still hard for her, though. I'd take back all the stress and fatigue, gladly. It'll take her quite a while to get used to this new life, especially after 60-some years of marriage. My heart goes out to you all.
