I love seeing things come together.

So, after fighting my metal work teacher all year, he still wont let me build my tallbike. He says the design would never work (it's just a basic double decker).

But, I managed to start it today in a friends garage, and we made some good progress and it should be done by the weekend. Pics come tommorow.

Your metal-work teacher sounds like a royal pr**k. Even if he doesn't want you to make a project of something that he finds unworkable (in favor of something that he thinks you could learn much from), there is much to be learned from failure, if that, indeed would be the way that this goes.

In any case, you'd think that he would offer some support, albeit extracurricular, to you, given your enthusiasm, to proceed with your project. I've found, in my Vega experience, that I learn twice as much when I do something wrong. First, I learn what not to do, and then I learn what the actual solution is.

    <coughcough> What a pr**k you have for a metal-work teacher.

Can Vega pay him a, uh, "Vega social visit"? <serious Vega look>

Vega's lookin' forward to your pics, wtp. You keep workin' on it.

Oh, I have no doubt in my mind he is a prick. I wanted to make a brake booster for my trials bike (Mostly so my shoe doesnt tear the hydro cable out) so I spent about two and a half hours last night drawing up and measuring a template for it.

I got to school, showed him and he just flat out said it wouldnt work. He hasnt even seen the bike it's going on. It just wouldnt work. We dont get along because we are two completly different people, and there are a few people like me in the class that he likes to single out for examples. I've just taken to subtle insults that everybody but him understands.

So yes, pay him a visit. It was also because of him it took me so long to get the cog for my fixed gear built.

Give Vega some "specifics" with regard to your location, but, more importantly, his location. <serious and pi$$ed Vega look> Cayunt have th' pr***k pickin' on my fellers, after all. *Vega-brow furrowed, checkin' out flight schedules*

[Note to Song: this is how we-all handle it on the Southsiiiade, uh, midwest-Southsiiiiade..... Y'all'ul see.]

Might post pics later. If they're not too ugly. Or incriminating.

Anyone remember the "Billy Jack" films? <curious redneck Vega look>

Liability issues will keep many from helping you build things that have the potential for harm. I used to teach, and I could have easily lost my job just from one parental complaint, let alone a lawsuit.

Take it easy, and understand the big picture.

I don't know the full story on the "sword", as it takes years of apprenticeship to learn to make tempered steel both hard and flexible enough to be used as an effective weapon. I doubt seriosly this will occur in a shop class in a couple of months. As a matter of fact, I bet $500 that it's not gonna happen.

A facsimile is the best a kid could muster in that situation.

You, on the other hand, have the real potential of building a deathtrap on wheels, that could put you in a wheelchair, get the teacher fired, the county would be in the newspaper, your parents could go to court or jail, and the school could get shut down.

Well, of course it isnt a real folded katana or anything, but he's making it out of thickish plated steel (Dont know the guage), he's put a nice curve on it, a nice tip on it and has it ready to be sharpened. He's made a hilt for it and has the tang running right on through it. So while it isnt a real sword, it would still take nothing to kill somebody with it.

Like I said, I don't know the whole story. But right now, YOU are the one who decided to violate the laws and ordinances of this board, and several international and local laws.

You cannot use someone else's bad example as an excuse for your own wrong behaviour.

Delete that man's info, and that threat. Trust me on this. Too many people act on bad cues in this day and age. You don't want that on your head.

Telling people to drop a "Scud missile" on his house with his address posted is a dangerous thing to do.

If he was killed by a random criminal, the police would come looking for you.

One last thing, to end on a positive note.

You are a young guy, and obviously very intelligent and resourceful. Don't let negative energy be your prime motivator. You said yourself you have anger problems that come up every three weeks or so. Deal with that.

I learned a long time ago that I am my own worst enemy. When anger and hate take over, you see everyone and everything as being against you. That's not the reality. The reality is, you have the power to make the world what you want it to be.

With your skills and sharp mind, you can have it all. Just focus. You can also throw it all away.

There are a lot of smart people with wasted lives because they never considered to temper it with wisdom.

    Good luck to you.

Some things you don't joke about, like real people's lives and livelihoods.

I edited (added some things) to my posts to you. Go back and read it, if you get a chance.

You blame your teacher for your cogs ;you are angry over your tallbike (his fault too).

Take responsibility for your own life, and you will not be so angry all the time. You will be too exhausted from DIY. I admire you for taking the first steps toward independance. Now, the next step is to stop blaming others for not having what you want in life.

Remember: how awesome is your personal power to influence your attitude and situation in life.

The problem with the cog is that he didnt think it was possible to drill it because it was hardened steel. Just because the steel is hardened doesnt mean you cant drill through it. I eventually got it made at home, but it took ALOT longer then it should have if he would have allowed me to use a drill press and A cobalt bit.

He isnt worried about the safety aspect of the tallbike, he's letting other students build things like bench presses, if one of those came down on you it's alot more dangerous then a tip off of a tallbike. He just doesnt think the design will work and he's to stubborn to listen. Same deal with the brake booster, he hasnt seen the bike and he wont let me tell him what it's for and what I want it for.

I'm not angry at all, a little frusterated but not angry. I joined metal work to learn and work with metal and do some projects on the way. How will I learn if he doesnt let me? All I've really accomplished this year (Started early september, finishing in febuary and I have a three hour class every other day) is making a little toolbox, thats all.

re: tallbike - take in a picture of another tall bike with someone riding it. Counter-example to his opinion may be the best solution (and the simplst too). Fight smart, not angry.
