    another american idol thread

I do find the initial shows kinda humorous with the ridiculous lack of talent, but why do the judges have to humiliate the contestants? Why do they have to make fun of their appearance for instance? It shows a total lack of taste and class even though I know that's not what the show is shooting for.

I honestly felt sorry for some of those folks though I know they knew what they were getting into. Some of these kids looked like they might be a little slow mentally. There's a lot of crap on TV but this has brought it to a new low.

There should be enough entertainment simply in listening to those that can't sing but think they can. You don't need to pound them into the ground.

    Your thoughts?

Yea I watched part of both of the new episodes. Not only are they now dragging out the scenes of people's humiliation, but even randy now is saying some really rude things. It's almost to the point of not being entertained. I used to think simon's comments were mildly amusing, but now it's just not.

I watched it too and had mixed feelings about it. I dont think making fun of someone's look is OK,calling a girl a giraffe because she is tall ect..
    I thought it was tasteless.
But am I the only one who thought that part of the show could of been fake?
what about when that hairdresser wanted to fix this guy's hair and he got taken out by security, am I the only one who thought this incident was made up?

Could be. Maybe it's now modeled after professional wrestling. If so, hopefully those folks are getting plenty of money to look like fools.

I guess I am just a hard a$$ but I find it funny every year and it is the best time to watch.............who should be ashamed are the friends and families that tell these people that they can sing and should try out.

That is just wrong............plain mean......plain ole mean to tell someone they can sing when they sound like a cat in heat!

I think its horrible that people are soooo willingly to embarrass themselves. Come on do you really believe that your that amazing of a singer cause a few peeps tell you so??

Its interesting show to watch and sometimes I hide my head cause I can't believe that some of these people really believe that their great singers

As far as the Judges reactions well I just remind myself that its a show and its what brings in the bucks to pay their paychecks. Its sad that people have to resort to cruelness to make a point.

I couldn't tell you the number of times I've heard someone do an awful version of the national anthem. For some people, all it takes is a small compliment from someone (most of the times from someone who doesn't want to be mean) and they think they're the next big star. That's not the part that bothers me though. It's the cutting, humiliating, beat then down comments that I don't think are really necessary. It's entertaining enough without that. If anyone thought it was funny when Simon said that kid looked like a monkey, they are cruel. Hopefully that kid was part of the plan.

I must admit though that once the bad ones are eliminated, the show isn't worth watching.

People will do anything and sign any release to get on television. Just watch Cops. or Jerry Springer.

American Idol is no different during the initial stages. Nobody's getting paid except Simon, Paula, Randy, and Ryan. This is why I have no sympathy for anyone willing to wait hours and days and know they are in for a rude treatment. It's been five years people. Simon's rude. Randy's getting ruder. Paula's a seemingly doped up lump of blah. Contestants are still mostly untalented tone-deaf kids who didn't get honesty from their high school choral teachers. They want attention and validation. Simon is in it to find a singer who can make him tons of $$$, not give false praise. Why should he waste his time with constructive criticism? There are 100,000 other people waiting to get beaten down before they find their cash cow.

BTW, the ratings for this week's episodes were insane.

Ratings. They think many people watch it because of the rude judges.

I used to tell Jessica, "It's all fun and games until someone offs themselves after something Simon says to them", but then I realized, they probably think "any publicity is good publicity" and the show would go on.

Anyone who offs themselves because of what Simon says, well... I better leave that thought unwritten....

I wonder if they have counselors waiting off-camera, as they do on some talk shows? Or a cool down room like the kids have at the National Spelling Bee after they miss a word?

This show is a train wreck. It's a beautiful, fantastic train wreck. It's what happens after the End Times. It's the Third Coming. And it's an amazing thing to watch.

Sure there are freaks, and some of them are actually sweet people who don't deserve to be humiliated on national television. But in a way, they win, because people know who they are now. They get their bit of famousness. The sweet people aquit themselves beautifully on this show. And I don't laugh at the sweet people. Not even Simon goes after the really messed up people. And it's actually kind of nice to get to know them (from a very, very safe distance).

But the nutjobs. The people who have been "singing since they were two" (really? Were you any good at two?). The deluded people who's dream it is to be on stage, in the lights, with all the fans screaming their names, to be recognized, and wanted, and believe in their heart of hearts that they are exceptional in this very specific way. The people who's parents and teachers and friends have all lied to them and told them they were fabulous and amazing in order not to shatter their fragility. Those are the people I love to watch. They make this show.

My favorite question that the judges ask is, "Why do you think you are the next American Idol?". And there's a moment on most of the contestants' faces of pause and reflection and utter panic. Because they know that they aren't. Some don't have that though. Some truly believe that they are about to have greatness thrust upon them. But it ain't going to happen. Simon and Randy are doing these folks a favor. And it's fun to watch.

Because it's okay not to want to be famous. It's okay to be ordinary. It's okay to be normal and boring. And go to work and do your job well. Not everyone can be exceptional in this specific way.

Those who have made it to the final part of the show have worked for it and have enough talent, personality, and looks to make it happen. Those who win are exceptional. And even then stardom isn't guaranteed. Only Kelly Clarkson has really achieved anything lasting so far. And maybe Clay Aiken. Maybe.

And the finals are fun, because we do get to see some very talented people working hard at what they're good at. Some are better than others.

The auditions can be painful, they can be mean. And I do agree that the first two shows have been a bit on the freak show side of things. But it is fun to watch.

Jennifer Hudson? She didn't just win raves for her part in Dreamgirls, did she? The Golden Globe nod pretty much equals Oscar nomination. Not too shabby for someone who didn't make the final two.

Carrie Underwood? She's as good as any of the other safe singers on country radio and sells records like hotcakes.

That one Marine guy from season two? He's had some success on country radio.

BTW, Aiken didn't win Idol. Ruben Studdard won that season.

Several folks have used Idol as a springboard to success. Usually it's the ones who have the drive to not quit just because they didn't win it all. They aren't revolutionary industry talents, but they are as good as a lot of stuff out there these days. The ones who don't have it go the way of Justin Gwarreeenie (or however he spells it).

When Carrie Underwood came to our area, her tickets sold out in record time including a purchase by me for my daughter. Only time will tell if she's a flash in the pan.

Ah... you're right. I forgot about Carrie Underwood. And yeah, I know Ruben won. But I hear Kelly Clarkson on the radio at least ten times a day when I'm listening. I've heard Bo twice ever. Fantasia never. Ruben never. I have yet to hear Taylor Hicks. I think I heard Daughtry, but it could have been Nickleback or Creed or Live or someone else.

But I guess that's my point. And maybe we're making the same point. Just because you get to the finals, doesn't mean you're done. Jennifer Hudson would probably not have had a shot at Dream Girls had she not been on Idol, but she sure didn't get the part solely because she was on AI. And now she's got a shot at a fantastic career. And good, because she's completely awesome. And Kellie Pickler is working it. She's been on the Tonight Show a bunch of times as a special correspondent (she's freakin' hilarious), and she's performed on the Tonight Show as well.

AI is a wonderful springboard for some and for a few it's back to dullsville. Some people may end up making appearances at the mall. Which is great; no one pays me to show up at the mall.

yeah, he's getting airplay, but sounds just like the bands you mention above. He's gone all rock 'n roll by dropping his first name, I see. Well, I guess that worked for Morrissey....

I'm Tivo'ing this show for the first time ever this year, just to check it out. I am astounded by the number of contestants. There are thousands and thousands and thousands. So you will find a lot of nut jobs. It's what the show thrives on.
