General Cycling needs extreme makeover?

I've been wondering this for awhile now. If you were new here you might assume that the General Cycling forum would be one of the most active because of the term "general" encompassing so many things. But quite the opposite is true.

Posting in General Cycling is a lot like talking to one's self. In fact i often have things i am considering posting there, but change my mind and don't because there really is little quality traffic there. What is the problem with that forum? Frankly, it SUCKS!

What can be done to fix it? Honestly, i never thought i would say it, but if i have a general bike related question or comment, i would just as soon post it here in Foo, because at least i know i will get replies and from people whom I know and can value\devalue their opinion. It shouldn't be that way but it is. I like topics to fit in their proper place, but right now I don't think anything really fits in general cycling. OK, so maybe a lot of things "fit" there but there are no results produced.

Yeah, I think General Cycling is a little weird. Seems like almost all the topics in there could easily fit into one of the other forums. There's threads on so many topics that are so diverse, you really don't know what to expect when you go in there. It's almost like Foo but slightly more cycling oriented.

Case in point. Here is a thread where Chip appears to be arguing with himself.

I had asked a mod about whether I could cross post to a couple of forums, since the article was applicable, or if I should just put it in General...they recommended General. Of course since it was me, they probably liked the idea of INSTANT THREAD DEATH!

If the General forum goes, its content may be placed in Foo instead, diluting the fine grade of silliness we all enjoy.

Foo is the only non bike-related forum, or so I'd thought. It should probably remain a purely social get-to-know-ya place. I'm concerned that if we get rid of General, Foo will become the new catchall forum.

I guess my point, was that one would think a forum entitled "General Cycling" would garnish a lot of traffic because it encompasses basically any general cycling issues. I can see why a forum like the triathlon forum would have little traffic, mainly because it is a niche.

I think the problem that might need addressed is that there are in fact a lot of topics that don't fit in one of the categories from time to time. That means it must go into the General Cycling, or the miscellaneous forum. Trouble is, that is about the equivalent of putting it in the trash.

Like, i said sometimes i have a topic that doesn't fit. I then realize it will have to go to General Cycling, and knowing what i know about that forum, some times i don't even bother to post. I just forget it, or post it in foo. Ride Pics are a good example. You go to the trouble of taking a bunch of pics on your ride to share, but where do you put them?

If you put them in General than nobody will see them. At least not anybody that you want to.

Sorry Chip it was me that suggested it go to General Cycling. I think everyone needs to remember that we all have our forum that we hang out in. There are tons of people that don't visit lots of other forums on here for one reason or another. They don't like someone, or its the same questions over and over again, or they don't relate to the material, like I said many reasons.

General cycling just happens to be one of these.

I think it would help if everyone learns to break away from their comfy blankets and visit some other forums.

We are a foo family over here but it would make more of a difference to post else where (too) and get to know others

Snowy

I didn't name names!

I may be a fooster, but I really don't hang out in just one forum. I usually browse the new posts and pop in wherever I get the urge. I'm like the BF crazy relative, always popping in to annoy people.

General Cycling really is pretty dead, but not as dead as Recreational & Family. Kinda sad, really.

I suspect that if the people in the other forums wanted to visit Foo, they would. Foo is for non-cycling stuff.

Please don't visit other forums to post non-cycling stuff. It's okay to stay here in Foo. If you're interested in the forum, feel free to post, but don't make it a mission to post somewhere other than Foo. If you see an unanswered post in something like Recreational & Family, you may wish to answer, but it should be done respectfully and helpfully. It's not Foo, and it specifically says 'Family' so try to keep it clean and on topic. Foo doesn't have 'topics', that's why it's Foo.

As an example, if you aren't interested in Alt Bike Culture, why would you go there? Same with the Touring forum--it's not 'Foo'. You'll just annoy the regulars who may like their quiet, peaceful forum.

If you want to expand your boundaries, and are genuinely interested, that's a different story. But try learning the lingo, and learn the pace and feel of the forum before posting. And, please, no extreme makeovers. That's a Foo idea.

Yeah. This sort of reminds me on my 8th grade dance where everybody sat on the side all night waiting for the first person to bust a move. Something tells me it is going to end about the same way as well.

Seriously, I agree with you snowy. I wish more foosters would venture out of foo.

it's not easy, i myself went back and forth in the road forum for half a year, i kept coming back here and didnt want to go back, now I find myself loving the road forum, but it's not easy to break from your comfort zone.
there are i guess a lot of people who think foo is not worth it, that's the word and that makes me upset, I always say to come and visit and that they'd be proved wrong.
i wish people mangled more among forums.

Yep its not easy. I always find myself getting ready to post something and then I delete cause I'm worried about sounding stupid.

Also, its not just foosters its everyone in my opinion.

We all get stuck in one place or another for reasons of our own. Its not bad, but we need to remind ourselves that there are other forums to visit.

I like the road forum as well. The only problem I see there is that some of the posters think that road bikes are only racing bikes.
