    I need to vent

I'm an illinois resident, a little more then an hour northwest of the city. I come from a city with a mean yearly income of 47,871. Thats about what my mother made before she got married and moved to Michigan with a man she'd been dating for a few years who made twice that. She intended on helping with my school, which is out of state since i go to the University of Iowa. It's expensive, but i know that...with the little help from the family and student loans it shouldn't be too bad.

My dad makes about 70 a year but he also supports 5 other people in his house.

My moms husband turned out to be a real creep, wouldn't help with my education and was verbally abusive, and really outright odd, towards my mother. She has moved back to illinois, but is now out of work, has no home (she sold hers).

So essentially, the costs i incur for school are out of my pocket in one way or the other. I work while at school, i take out loans, i work while school is out of session. In fact i've held a job since i was 15...i haven't been without a job for 6 1/2 years, yay me...right so...

My two roommates are also from illinois, they come from a town with a mean yearly income of $88,828...double. Their parents are both married, one of my roommates father was particularly successful and has retired by 50 and now travels with his wife.

I've grown up with a lot less then most my friends but much more then many other people. I don't hold a families monetary status against them. After all, i'm at school so one day i can have kids who were better off then i, that is the goal in life isn't it?

My roommates do not pay for anything, tuition, food, rent, not even the booze they buy on the weekends. It all goes on the credit cards. Again this doesn't bother me, hell sometimes i benefit from it as well.

So we have a year long lease that goes through July. School is out April 25th. I pay $500 a month to live here. May June July, 3 months...$1500. I have a jbo in illinois, a few actually. I am going to go to summer school in illinois, it's cheaper and allows me to work. I have a girlfriend (of 6 years) in illinois. I'm not staying in Iowa City.

Solution? Sublease...find someone who needs a place in Iowa City for 3 months, they pay my rent, they stay in my room...problem solved. Except, my roommates are stonewalling that effort. They have to sign a form agreeing to me subleasing. They are goign home too, but because they can afford it they are just going to use this house to store their stuff over the summer until they move in to their new place before next school year.

To me $1500 is going to be roughly a summers work (assuming i'm taking 3 summer classes). To me $1500 is half of the summer school, it is rent for next year, it is hard earned busting my own ass money. To them, it is nothing.

I've decided i'm going to call their mothers and talk to them...since they are the ones paying for this i feel it should be their decision if i can sublease or not.

    Why pay?

No, seriously, why pay? Move your stuff out and don't pay. Next fall you can find a new place to live. If your room mates don't comprehend that risk to them, then perhaps you should gently suggest that if they want to safely store their stuff there, they should pay your rent.

And, of course, the life's lesson is that the best long-term financial plan you can make is being a loving spouse (so much so that your spouse never wants to get a divorce).

I don't necessarily fault you for feeling this way, but it sounds as if you are making monetary status an issue--otherwise, why did you include all the details in your post?

Anyway, is it possible to find a summer subleasee who they already know? That might make them more agreeable.

i think it sets the tone well for the differing views on money between him and the roommates. but, yeah, they're just details and shouldn't affect the decision any.

are you on the lease? if not, you're decision is easy - you just pick up and go.

if you are on the lease, then talk to owner themselves. if the roommates are too lazy to fill out the paperwork, then just bypass them. lazy asses.

Exactly. I will say though that such an upbringing (theirs) has given them some distorted views on the world, but i'm not sure they apply here.

And yes, i'm on the lease, i can't just "up and leave"

check the lease that you signed. i would think there must be some sort of early termination clause or something that deals with this situation. ??

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. May be cheaper then $1500

As for the cheese...cute, thanks for the input. Really deep and thought provoking.

Just because you are on the lease doesn't mean that you can't just up and leave -- of course its best to talk with your room mates first. But, in the final analysis, its a game of chicken with them, not with the landlord. If the landlord sues anyone, it will most likely be all of you together with a "collection" effort only against the wealthy kids. That's the game of chicken part.

If I wuz you, I'd borrow $1500, pay off the rent 3 months early, then round up a bunch of homeless crackheads and let them stay in your room for 3 months as your guests after you've moved out.

Barring that, read your lease and talk to the landlord about breaking the lease early for you or letting you sublet in lieu of breaking the lease. If your roomies continue the stonewall, call their mommies and show them their myspace pages.

The university has some lawyers who donate their time for housing issues, typically it's renter vs landlord, but...i'll see what they have to say.

Give your friends some GHB and have them sign a agreement to allow you to sublease and then your fine. Or just get the hell out and who cares if they are having a problem with subbing it. Tell them better to have one third paid for than not!

Apparrently you cant read the thread, so i'll summerize

The lease is split 3 ways
I can sublease, my landlord doesn't care
    My roommates care
My roommates aren't even going to be living here, instead tehy are going to have mom and dad pay $1500 each so they don't have to "deal with all that"

You haven't said it in so many words, but it sounds as if your roommates aren't concerned in the least about how your monetary situation would be worse off, because of their relative wealth. And probably they aren't concerned about how causing you financial hardship would affect your relationships with each other, so if I were in your place I would conclude you should not (or in fact do not) worry about how they will regard you after the summer.

You don't have any obligation to underwrite their lifestyle, and certainly not contribute toward the cost of their storage arrangements.

If you are able to sublet and have found a subtenant acceptable to the landlord, and the roommates won't take over your rent (frankly, I wouldn't trust them if they promised to), then by all means sublet and get the landlord's written acceptance to release you.
If roomies don't want a subtenant, they can simply pay you to keep a subtenant away.
Or, if they don't want to pick up your rent and don't trust leaving their stuff there with a stranger, they can sublease to somebody they trust (thereby reducing their expense).
Or they can even give a trusted friend a place to stay for free over the summer to watch over the stuff (at no additional cost to them).

The roommates likely were able to read the sublease provisions as well as you, so they must have realized subleasing might occur and have no cause to complain. Subleasing is a very common situation in university settings.

As a perspm who rents to students, I usually rent my rooms from August through June, allowing the students the option to either sublet during the summer or have the others make up the total rent of the house should they decide to stay for the next school year. They usually stay unless they graduate and at that I require two months notice. It is up to them how it happens but either way, I get my total rent each month. With six students living in the same house, I'm surprised I have no problems. They find a way to come to an acceptable agreement together once they realize that they have full responsibility of the entire rent. Is there a head renter in your circle of room mates? In a situation such as this, there usually is. I have one who pays a little bit less per month if he agrees to collect the checks from the other renters and submit them to me all at once. He is the one responsible to get the checks to me on time, in full. Maybe you should talk to that person and see what can be done as a cooperative agreement between all of you.

    Please go over your lease.
