I resent the doughnut remark...and it's always easy to jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts...especially when "pigs" are involved...

Why I said that is because around here, when I ride without a helmet, cops smile and wave at me.
But this poor kid got the shait scared out of him instead of a warning.

I don't condone the way this was handled but I can assure you this kid was doing something dangerous. There is a MAJOR problem here with those mini road racer styled motor bikes (don't know what else to call them). Kids running down people on the sidewalk or riding down and across city streets. I've almost hit them several times while out on my Ducati. They dart in and out of parked cars and are so low to the ground you can't see them until it's too late. And, like deer, they tend to cross the roads in lines of several bikes. These bikes are not dirt bikes so their only function is to be ridden on pavement by children. Not a good thing.

I have a pocket dirtbike, it kicks ass.

Also, the cop was out of line. No reason to handcuff a kid to a bench and yell, thats what makes kids choose people of authority like that as targets later in life.

Agreed on the cop's behavior. RE: your pocket bike. Is it actually a dirt bike and not a pocket bike styled like a GP bike?

I suspect there is a lot more to this incident than was reported in the news story.

One would hope that adults would have the sense to refrain from making stupid, knee-jerk reactions to one-sided newspaper stories, but apparently that is not always the case.

Agree with you, wethepeople. It sounds like this cop has an attitude problem. He needs a sensitivity class.

I dunno. Just last week we had some diouche bag teen agers riding an old Yamaha dirtbike downthe sidewalk. As they came to the corner they just shot in to the street, right in front of a pickup truck that was making a right turn on the street. The kis (they were riding two up) had to lay the bike down to avoid being hit.

I stopped, rolled the window down and pointed at them and laughed my ass off. Telling them that they deserved to get run the fark over for doing a dumb assed thing like that.

Bastiges should be busted!

Trust me on this. They didn't "lay the bike down." They don't have the skill to know how to do that. They probably panicked and dumped it and themselves on the ground. I definitely agree that these kids are a major problem. FWIW, if it's illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk (which it is in some towns in CT) riding a motorized vehicle is way worse. There have been people seriously injured in CT due to bikers on sidewalks.

"riding a motorized dirt bike on a sidewalk. "

Big difference from what the thread title implies. First. the cop should have handed the ticket to the Parents. They do not know this is against the law?

In my neighborhood there is a little punk kid about 9 or so and he rides this dirt bike wherever he wants. Have see him zip across another neighbors front yard. I was watching him blast through the park the other day when it was loaded with kids playing. This is an accident waiting to happen. He was having to dodge all the kids as he was riding as fast as that bike could carry his fat a$$, just showin' off.

Got the picture?

Okay, now cuff the kid and confiscate the bike. Punish the Parents as well where it really hurts, in the wallet.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I understand. I'm a moto rider myself. Either way, it's not a form of 'get off' that I enjoy.
No harm, no foul.

But, at least they were wearing all the right gear, right? Right? (This is why I love Darwin).
