Why are guys like this?

They are all manly and tough to everyone around them but in realilty their woman knows how gentle and sweet they can really be.

This is not true in my world. So, my answer to the question, "Why are guys like this?" is "They aren't."

Agreed. Perfect example. On the trail, come across an obstacle of some sort. One guy looks at the other and says, "you'll do it if you're a man." At that point, there is no going back. Do it or die trying.

But, to comment on Siu's question, typically a woman (at least in my experience) doesn't pose a challenge in a way that threatens a guy's manliness the same way his buddies will. So, in front of his buddies, it's a way to keep face. In front of his girl, he can let his guard down. Which is why we as guys need a lady in our lives.

Books and jokes are everywhere about how men and women are different. They all want some of the same things; like acceptance, love, and recognition. But, they go about getting them in different ways. They misunderstand each other often. They confuse and frustrate each other at times. From my six decades of experience as a male who often watches females, I would say men at the same time want tenderness and feel a need to mark their territory in an effort to gain respect from other men. Respect is a big thing with men and they sometimes do some very strange things to get it. (Security is probably just as big a thing with women as respect is with men.) If a woman can make a man feel she respects and accepts him, he will give her just about anything she wants.

It's one of the classical themes of love. In Plato's Symposium, Alcibiades argues that love is the one thing that can make an honorable man lose himself.

...

At one point my wife commented that it was a shame that some men are cut off from their feelings. My friend turns to me at says "I thought we were proud of that."

Better to address and resolve the issue so that one doesn't "need" anyone to make them complete. Then, when you have a woman in your life, it's because you want her there without the need. Just one man's opinion.

Don't take what I said so literally. My point was that having a woman in one's life helps to create balance. This is a beautiful thing. In no way was I saying that the only reason a guy gets together with a woman is because he "needs" her rather than "wants" to be with her.

OOOOh Good comment! I particularly like the Plato Dialogs! That one in particular as well as the Euthyphro Dialog involving Socrates and Euthyphro! Confusing as ....and fun to analyze!

Got it. Thanks for the clarification. My experience over the years has been that a lot of people look for people they think will make them whole. The larger point I was trying to make is that one (male or female) needs to make one's self whole. The rest will follow. Sorry if I misread what you were saying.

Because every other domesticated animal is gelded to control their negative secondary sexual characteristics, (horses, goats, dogs, etcetera,) whereas human males are not so lucky.

It's all a giant game.

See, the women never go after the "passive" guys, instead going for the "alpha" male...so when around guys, we all act like jackasses in an effort to assert our dominance, or at least attempt of dominance amongst each other.

To do any less would be basically killing any chance of female recognition, as the rest of the guys would be the ones getting female attention.

I know this from much experience. I went from being a loudmouthed punk (who was swimming in females), to a quiet reserved guy (who ended up not meeting any females, since my friends got to them first), and now becomeing the loudmouth again. Why....because like it or not, it's the truth....passive males don't get the girl/woman/lady.

There are some women who don't want to depend upon a man for anything and tend to seek out their own independence. Knowledge of cars (no chance of being stranded) and ability to (or at least the courage enough to) protect myself. You won't hear too much of a prissy whine coming out of me.
