So I bought a computer, now I have to wait

    Hi,
my old computer is 3 /12 years old, and wasn't fast even when it was new.
    I am jumping from a 5200 Nvidia card to a 8800 Nvidia...

After my tax money came I dithered and couldn't make up my mind for 5 or 6 weeks.

I finally did it yesterday. Now I have to wait for a couple weeks for it to get here.
I should have gotten the accelerated build option, one week instead of two.

It's a cool computer, if you like computer games or sims. Got a Stacker 830 case,
an Asus P5N32-E mobo, and EVGA 8800 320 meg card.

I got Fear for Xmas, I will finally be able to try it.

Build them. I put in time at a Mom & Pop computer store. We do a lot of Virus removal work, w/o the usual wipe & reload. We sell parts and do spec builds too.

Thanks, I hope so. I'm starting with the the 1.86 Core 2, a year or so from now, I'll throw in whatever was the fastest cpu Intel released for this socket. At the same time I'll throw in a video card, and possibly a second one for sli at a later date.

I hope I can get 3 or 4 years out of the motherboard. If you haven't seen a review of it, it's one step down from the top of the line Asus gaming motherboard. In a side by side picture you need an expert to notice the slight differences. Of course, this one is over a hundred bucks cheaper. It has cooling on a bunch on the little chips, it has more widgets and gadgets than you can shake a stick at.

One reviewer overclocked the video card I am getting and got really good results.
This case has a plastic panel made to hold fans on the side, one slot holds a fan right over the video card. So when I get around to overclocking it, I will first put in one of those quiet fans you hear about.

    I can't wait.

    Hi,
have you tried it on any of the hardware intensive games yet? I am curious
to see how it will work in the new ones like Crysis and Flight SimulatorX

Did you see the review where they guy overclocked it? The thing
almost caught up to the more expensive 8800 card.

You are a patient person. That is just about the only type of pc work I won't do (besides printers)...makes me wanna gauge my eyes out. I have outright refused to fix peoples home computers now. I wish you were here, give me somewhere to direct them

I love building machines, but twice now, for the price of what I needed in machines, I could buy a generic HP, stuff in my two upgrades (a decent video card, and a PCI card with more USB ports... I use USB and IEEE1394 ports like its going out of style, and I have to balance IO), and be happy.

My next machine is almost definitely going to be something I built, as I need to make machine that all it does is sit there, run Retrospect, back up machines to its internal hard disk, and periodically copy that data to an external hard disk that goes offsite.

I am pissed at the tape drive companies... for something that is even usable with today's drive capacities, its $1000 for a DLT IV. Meh. :/

In your opinion, betweeen the 3 mass produced computers, Dell, HP, Gateway, which do you think is the best?

IMO, I'd own none of them as a tower, but have a older Compaq Armada laptop that I run linux on. For business applications I understand dell's server support is pretty good. At the consumer level I'd recommend a spec built system either home built or from your LCS, and I don't mean "Geek Squad". Heh, heh, heh, we fix a lot of what they say to wipe and reload.

I like dell. In canada anyways, their support is better than the other two. In the end thats where small business's loose their shorts.

no geek squad here, but then again, if someone hoops their computer enough I figure its alesson learned to wipe and reload, I just hope they have learned from their mistake. Fixing it for them teaches them nothing

    Hi,
this depends entirely on what you want to do with it.... and your budget.

So..what's the budget, and what do you use it for besides surf the net, and do you plan on getting a really big (over 20 inch) monitor sometime?
