What's happening to me?

Sunday, a friend got me to get on this strange flatbar contraption. It resembled my trusty road bike, but the geometry was different. Everything was beefier, and the front had some sort of suspension. Well, he convinced me to ride this strange thing down a mountain. Crash course. No newbie trail, just straight to me holding on for dear life as I fly over rocks.

Strangely... I found this to be fun, so I went again and again today. I traded him a pair of expensive tabla for one of these contraptions made by Trek, and I found myself switching out the crappier parts for the ones I have laying around. Now, I'm surfing ebay and looking at the hawley catalog at the price of a Reba Race.

I don't think this is supposed to be happening.

I'm eying prices of forks here, and it's looking like for price and features, the Reba takes it. The Black has a few strikes against it, and I'm not looking for something as light as the Sid. Any Fox shocks in the same price range?

Also, would it be worth replacing the lower end 8 speed parts on this trek with 9 speed stuff, or should I just try to shove the whole thing out the door for $250 and put in some extra cash to get another bike? Is it worth working with the frame and building up? I already have some Deore parts I stashed away.

This is just the envy and jealousy speaking. In time those negative thoughts will take you over. And when it happens, you'll soon find yourself bombing down a twisty, rocky trail grinning from ear to ear.

Okay, I have the 4300. It's an entry level type trek. The crappy C50 front derailleur was not cutting it and it was flexing too much, so I threw on a Deore I had laying around. It's the 8-speed stuff, but it works. The Hawley rep came in and I bought a three year old Sid off him and threw it on there. I think what I'm going to end up doing is working up to buying a nice scott hardtail I like, then sell this thing or use it as the loaner bike.

here's what I've been looking at.

You're slowly being wussified, Falkon. You know, deep down, there nothin' like hurtlin' down a smooooth asphalt hill, hopin' you'll hit 50mph, and wonderin' if you'll be showin' off some serious roadrash to the admirin' and awed ladies in the coffee shop....

And the answer is, "No." I just wonder myself if any real man can appreciate similar beauty marks on a woman. But I still likes me the speed aspect to roadridin'.

That's what I wanna do, Vega.

One day, though. One day.........*dreaming of skinny tire bikes*

Falkon, Mr.Smashy knows a lot about the 4300 and maybe it would benefit you to ask him about good components for it's geometry and design of use. He really knows his stuff. I trust him highly on something like this.

eh, I know the most expensive route is trying to build this myself. It's actually cheaper to get a bike with the stuff I want already on it. Sucks.

Nah, GF, that's the game. You can be Thelma, or Louise, or Lucy or Ethel. Dig? And then we'll play "Speed Queen" and blow the local guys' minds. Dig?
