Is this true? What are they thinking?

If this is true, then I think we're going down the wrong road.

Scientists have created the world's first human-sheep chimera -- which has the body of a sheep and half-human organs, according to news report Monday.

The sheep have 15 percent human cells and 85 percent animal cells and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer.

They are trying to save lives because there are very few people who donate organs. All of this could be averted if we simply paid people to donate their organs upon death instead of hoping others will give them up for free.

If I remember right, couldn't they use this to grow new pancreases for type 1 diabetics and thus solve that problem?

just hope they don't give them the brainpower of a human, but the unbridled killing power of a sheep.

Probably not. The real problem with T1 diabetics is the immune system (usually). In fact, there are pancreatic transplants performed now, but the immune system will attack the new beta cells and the person is right back where they started. Currently, to avoid this problem, the transplant recipient ends up taking some very powerful anti-rejection drugs that leave the immune system quite crippled, and that comes with a host of other problems.

Still not acceptable for me.

Animals sometimes get sick and die - it's supposed to be that way. Raising, and killing one animal to save another is screwed up.

That sounds like a rhetorical question. And yes, the way the majority of animal protein in this country is "grown" is screwed up. -- not that this thread has ANYTHING to do with eating.

What does this thread have to do with anyway? OP, what were you thinking?

Maybe cloning horses with birds could provide flying horses. Or birds with lots of horsepower to pull trains and make 'em really fly! Yeah, that's the ticket,eh?

Or do it like some countries in europe: By default, when someone dies, certain harvestable organs are removed and distributed to those who need them. If someone isn't cool with this they can opt out, but they are no longer allowed to receive organs anymore either.

I dont get why people dont, I'm 18 and when I went for my license I checked yes where it asks if you want to be an organ donor. If i die why do I need my organs?

Good on ya, baybuh! There are certainly people who need 'em. I've been officially listed as an organ donor for more than 25 years now. Family and friends know this as well. ((hug))

I figure that when I die, there probably won't be much left of my organs. But hell, first come first served. Anybody who wants em can have em if they find my carcass.

True, but this thread didn't originate in Foo.

I didn't read the article. Are the Chinese prisoners electrocuted? The liver might be slightly cooked.

I'll have mine with a pinch of salt and a dash of satay sauce, yum.
