How to talk my wife into riding?

How do I get her started? Any ideas? Should I buy her a bike first?

That would probably help, otherwise it's be like that bank card commercial with the guy running because he couldn't use his reward points on a mountain bike.......

You might lo at renting one first for a ride or two though! See if it catches her interest!

Ask her if its something she wants to do. Involve her in every part of the bike shopping experience, that way she understands how much coin is being dropped to get her involved. Let her make the decision. And be prepared to accept it if she refuses. No sense in having a grouchy riding partner that does not really enjoy it. If she does dive in head first then thats awesome. But be prepared to listen to 30 miles worth of what needs done to the house and how she wants to get a new couch, etc, etc ,etc. If not so be it. There are other things that may bring better mutual enjoyment if biking doesn`t work out. Good luck

if she is trying to get you into something that she enjoy too and she still refuse cycling, try to make a deal with her that both of you would try each other's activities first. Might be a good way to go if she gets stubborn about not biking. Compromises between the 2 of you may be needed to get this going but it is just a idea if you run out of anything else to help encourage her into cycling.

Don't...

I've made the effort several times and won't try to get her to ride again...

If she shows interest and wants a bike then get her one.
If she has no interest, you'll be just wasting your time and money. She'll ride a few times, complain about how her butt hurts, yell at you for going to fast, yell at you for giving her "that look" because she said you were going to fast. You'll slow down to let her catch up, and she won't catch up, she'll just slow down also. She'll NEVER catch up! You'll turn around, but you'll be going too slow and can't unclip in time, so you fall over, and then she'll say "see, that's why I don't want those clip shoe things". AARRRGHHH!
Yea, get her a bike. Brilliant Idea!
I'm just sayin.

Drive her to the bike store, buy her a bike, some shorts, helmet, gloves, a fitting, seat pack and supplies.

Now leave, your job is done!!!!!

You and Mr. Beanz should collaborate - since you both are trying to get the significant other to do something And I assume you're both batting for the other team which means the other should know best what his team wants

Yeah somehow i get the feeling that 9 out of 10 times the guy withholding sex is going to work a hell of alot less then vice versa

I am withholding sex from myself until I buy me a new bike! I am such a bastage, I hate me for doing this to myself. I may teach myself a lesson and sleep with someone else just to show me who's boss.

Go at it slowly.
Get her a decent bike and involve her in the bike selection too. She will like the color, you will look at the components, frame geometry, quality, etc. Find something that fits your budget, that she likes, and is of decent enough quality.

Then take her on entry level rides, local green belt and the like.
Then once she gets used to riding there, take her to an easy trail and let her learn at her pace and in such a way that she enjoys it. She will catch on and progress this way and she will also see it as a positive.

I went through this with my wife twice, once getting her into riding bikes and then again getting her into riding snowmobiles.
We've been together for 11 years now and she does ride better now than several of my friends.

Actually, she wanted to learn. I bought some dvd instructions and spent about 4 weeks studying the steps about 2-3 hours a day.

Now we know the east coast swing (double, single and triple step),west coast swing,rumba,cha-cha!

Was really alot of fun doing the arm wraps, alternating turns, the cuddle, and all that stuff! I like it more than she does!

You should do your things and she should do her things. Even better would be for her to start riding with her girlfriends. It's the same way she likely doesn't want her man hanging around at her girl-only events. Time apart is a good and absolutely healthy thing and it keeps the relationship dynamic...
