at what point are you an alcoholic?

I had to go to a new doc as my old one retired. He was checking me out for stuff and asked me how much I drank. I told him the honest truth and he flipped out. I drink maybe oh, 4 bottles of wine a week. We're talking the "normal" smaller size, not the big 'ol jug sized bottles. I like wine. I especially like chilling with a nice red in the evening listening to music. But by his reaction my consumption is off the charts. He threw out the "alcoholic" term a couple of times. Whut? Ya kidding? Hmmmm.

I was perplexed as I know a lot of people who drink waaaay more than I do.

I've thought about giving up alcohol all together, even though it would take a "hobby" of mine away sort of.

Anyway, I know we have people here on both sides of the fence. I thought it would be interesting to throw it out there to talk about.

People seem to like to freak out about alcohol almost as much as they like to freak out about smoking.

I don't think 4 bottles of wine a week is too much.

If the drinking is having an unwanted effect on your life, then cut back. If not, play ball.

Try giving it up for a month and see what happens. Your intake does not seem unreasonable to me, though perhaps a little high.

That's only half a bottle a day, not unreasonable IMO

well, I'm not too worried about my consumption from my standpoint, but was startled by my doctor's perception.

1-4 6-packs a week is an alcoholic.

Isn't red wine supposed to be good for you or something?

As morally neutral as people like to think doctors are, they are no more free from their personal biases than any other professional.

Also, he could just be covering his ass.

There's only what, about 5 glasses per bottle? Hell, in Europe, it's not uncommon to have a glass or two with lunch, then a glass or two with dinner, AND a digestif. And I know that Europeans, for the most part, are reasonably healthy, non-obese people. WTF is up with your doc?!

Half a bottle of wine a day is approximately two generously filled glasses.

I'm not sure there is an objective way to define alcoholic, but my take is that if you feel that you HAVE TO HAVE A DRINK to get through the day, or just NEED a drink because is calms you down, then you're on your way to trouble. When the perceived NEED to drink trumps other daily family, work, or personal obligations, I think it's safe to start calling it alchoholism.

Barba suggests an interesting experiment above. Stop drinking for a week or a month. Does your life seem different? Did you feel a NEED to drink, or was there no difference in how you went about life?

sorry but one beer a day does not make you an alcoholic. maybe a six pack a day, but we're not talking beer, we're talkin' wine here. anyway grains and fruits are good for you, and I'd rather have mine preserved with naturally fermented alcohol than with a bunch of artificial chemicals.

Your new doc's a freak, a victim of the culture of sterilization and hyper-fear over any and all usage of those wonderful chemicals we enjoy so much in our lives.

4 bottles a week is fairly steady, possibly a tad heavy, but way way far from alcoholic. Some people need to get a grip.

Unless you chug one every morning when you wake up or something. Then I think you may have issues.

More often than not, Mrs. Mouse and I split a bottle of wine with dinner. That's 3 1/2 bottles per week apiece. I asked my doc about it last physical and she seemed to think two "generously filled" glasses per day isn't a problem. Part of it may have to do with getting regular exercise and being reasonably fit.

Sounds like your doctor lives in....I don't know....Utah, or somewhere.

Alcoholics have nothing to do with quantity....it has to do with how it affects them and their lives.

I know many drunks who do alright with their lives....admitted they would do better if they cut back a bit, but it's not like those around them are angry with their drinking (hell, even his wife and kids think he's the best thing since sliced bread....the guy goes through about 7-9 bottles of wine a week!)

But, I know poeple who go through two bottles a week that are definately alcoholics....it's all in how their drinking affects them. The first person I mentioned drinks socially pretty constantly outside of work, but is never piss drunk....the second one slams the bottles, and in general make an ass of himself.

I used to drink like a bloody fish (screw bottles, think gallons)....but I never had a problem, that was just called "college life"

Isn't that the docter's job, to tell you to always get into better state of health? If he can't tell you to cut back, no one has the right to.

There are so many "experts" on this. Usually the worst are reformed ones that are now the experts. 6 beers a week is hardly an alky.

I've been around some real full on alkies (fishing club) and I've seen these guys drink a 30 pack in 24 hours or a whole big bottle of Jack. Somehow they make it to work on Monday.

THAT is an alcoholic, functioning or not.

I'm not too worried about me per se. Just wanted to see what opinions were on it. When he told me that I was like "wow, really?" Catatonic I think you have a point - sometimes its not about the amount consumed.

Also, on a side note sometimes I actually feel better when I drink a little. I've had some races where I felt like I was turbo charged after having some wine or beer the night before. I'm not talking about getting blind drunk but maybe 3 or 4 glasses.

Oh, and on the consumption thing - I am a decent sized guy. 6' 195 pounds. A glass of wine for me isn't the same as for someone about half my size... (ahem - Vega )

I'll probably try the quitting for a month thing, but after next week. I'm on vacation next week.

Oh and I usually don't spread it out. I usually kill the bottle if I open it. I just don't drink on some days.

Here's a short test developed by the WHO for determining if you are an alcoholic.
Its used in 6 differenct countries. It doesnt just go by amount of alcohol- a lot
is behavior. Its just 10 questions- scroll to pg 17 for the test.
