I'm Not taking the JOB!!! :(

I decided not to take the job. I met with the employer this morning and they are offering me WAY LESS then what I currently make now.
After discussing it with my boyfriend and his parents (I needed help) we all agreed that it wouldn't be the best move for me.

You should at least counteroffer. I did this, and netted a few thousand more per year, with a guaranteed six-month review that would result in a mid-year increase in pay if I were performing to expectation. Got that, too. And, I got the year-end salary increase as well. Never hurts to counteroffer.

And PC2 is right. Sometimes, it's about the whole compensation package vs just the salary. Which company offers a better overall salary, retirement account, health insurance, medical reimbursement account, company stock, vacation, leave, etc? Be sure you're comparing all of these. The salary can come back up over time, so if the other benefits are better with the new job, it might still be the one to take....

No. My current employer pays for Health, I have a 401k, good vacation. So no nothing that would set them over the top!!!

That's too bad. You'd think big oil and gas would be more generous.

VegaVixen I did consider all these things. The crazy thing is in the meeting she (The President) stated that she is offering $5,000.00 more then what the original salary was going to be. I was shocked to say the less. We're talking a $15,000.00 DIFFERENCE!!

Ugh - I hate when they play the whole, "We're offering you more than what we normally would, you should be thrilled to work for $15k less to be here" card

Too bad - but screw them and enjoy your vacation!!

it's a little BS to get blindsided like this. Didn't you know going in what the position was going to pay? --Didn't they mention it at all?

Sucks. I'm sorry.

Get to Paris and clear your head and you'll come back to something perfect. It'll happen

Snowy, sorry to hear it fall out like that. One thing you can do is research what your position pays - then you can contact them and basically tell them that if they want anyone good - they are going to have to pay.

And if you are getting 15K more than the job normally pays...

I told the President in my first interview what I make yearly. She actually asked me, I thought that for sure they would offer me what I currently make or MORE?? So I'm quite disappointed.

That's usually how it works, interviews don't go further if the money isn't going to match up. I've had initial phone screens that ended 5 minutes into the conversation for that very reason. Ugh. Well it works out -- no company is worth working for that plays that kind of bait-n-switch. F-- em and move on.

Thats my plan. I have to call her this afternoon and let her know my answer.

Get used to it. I turn down job offers on a monthly bassis. They always want the best but they seem to have an unrealistic expectation of how much the best will cost.

Or to put it in biking terms: You won't get a brand new carbon fibre roadie for $50. Be realistic.

If the company thinks it can jerk you around like that, its not a place you would want to work, even if they were to accept a counteroffer. Unless the amount they offered was a mistake, cause that can happen. One of my senior coworkers never received a raise she was supposed to get becuase HR/payroll screwed up. Our boss knew she was getting a raise, but he never actually discussed it with her so it went undiscovered for a few months. Really, I'd follow up on it, maybe even talk to the president cause the amount may have been changed down the line by accident.
